Jesus first by a distance, then a living pope and a murdered minister

iFAMOUS Editorial Desk · 1 min read

The August 2026 religious leaders list mixes founders of faiths, saints and reformers with a handful of men who still hold office today.

No figure on any iFAMOUS list this month leads by the margin Jesus Christ holds here. The first-century preacher at the centre of Christianity has a fame score of 53.6, well over twice that of the next name, and the gap is a reminder that this ranking measures worldwide fame across all of history, not just the news.

The living leader with the most attention is Pope Leo XIV, the Chicago-born head of the Catholic Church, second at 22. Martin Luther King Jr., the Baptist minister who became the voice of nonviolent resistance in the United States, is third at 21.5, a shade ahead of Pope Francis, who died in April 2025 and sits fourth at 20.8. Mother Teresa, the Albanian-Indian nun and missionary, is fifth.

Iran supplies two of the next three. Mojtaba Khamenei, who became the country's third Supreme Leader in March 2026, is sixth at 16.3, and Ruhollah Khomeini, who held the office from 1979 to 1989, is seventh at 15. The Buddha follows at 13.2, then Benedict XVI and Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama, at 12.1.

Below the top ten the list turns historical: Ignatius of Loyola, Bernard of Clairvaux, John Calvin, John Paul I and Francis Xavier are all clergy or reformers from the twelfth to twentieth centuries. That shape is the story of the whole table. Ninety-nine people were measured across thirty-three countries, and only forty are alive. The United States contributes eleven names, Egypt nine, India eight, Germany six and Iran five, but the fame at the top belongs mostly to the dead.

    About this list

This list ranks the most famous religious leaders in the world as of August 2026, by overall global fame rather than one month's attention. It is the top 99 of 99 names the rankings measured in this sector, frozen as the permanent record of that edition. This is the standard reading: everyone, living or dead, on one scale. 40 of the 99 listed are living; the Alive reading restricts the same ranking to living people.

Jesus Christ is No. 1 on this list for August 2026. Behind Jesus Christ come Leo XIV and Martin Luther King Jr..

    What famous means here

Fame, in iFAMOUS, is how widely the world knows a name: how recognisable a person's name, face or work is, and how well people know who they are. It is assessed from extensive historical and current public data, some of it reaching back more than twenty years, and it is not merit, talent, importance or popularity on iFANN. The rankings model real-world global fame, not internet fame; the data is the instrument, not the subject. Activity on iFANN itself is excluded.

The month in the title is the date of this edition, not the period measured. The list is a snapshot of overall fame as it stood when the issue was frozen: a name does not lose its place because one month was quiet, and a trending moment alone does not put a name here. Trending attention is published separately on ifann.net.

    How the list was ranked

The iFANN Global Fame Rankings combine worldwide Wikipedia readership across languages, worldwide news coverage and search interest anchored against stable reference names, with search history reaching back to 2004. A twelve-month baseline sits behind the current reading and short-lived surges are capped, so the list reflects durable recognition rather than one week of headlines. Rankings are computed daily on ifann.net and frozen on the second day of the following month as that month's issue; a published issue never changes.

    About Religious Leaders

Religious Leaders is one of the sectors the journal ranks every month, alongside every country, origin and region list in this issue. Sector lists use the same rankings and the same scale as The 100, so a name can be compared across sectors and against the world. Pastors, evangelists, imams, rabbis, monks and other faith leaders with worldwide followings.

    Powered by iFANN

iFAMOUS is published by iFANN and powered by the iFANN Global Fame Rankings v5.62. Today's live standing for this list is on ifann.net; the journal freezes it once a month so it can be cited permanently.
