Leo XIV leads the living, with Tehran and Dharamsala close behind

Strip out the saints, founders and late popes and the August 2026 religious leaders list becomes a table of people who currently hold office.
Remove the dead from the religious leaders list and the table shrinks by more than half: forty living names out of ninety-nine measured. Jesus Christ, Martin Luther King Jr., Pope Francis, Mother Teresa, Ruhollah Khomeini, the Buddha and Benedict XVI all drop away, and what remains for August 2026 is a ranking of men who currently lead something.
Pope Leo XIV, born Robert Francis Prevost in Chicago and now sovereign of Vatican City, leads the living at 22. Mojtaba Khamenei, Supreme Leader of Iran since March 2026, is second at 16.3, and Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama and head of the Gelug school, is third at 12.1. Those three hold offices of very different kinds, and together they cover Catholicism, Shia Islam and Tibetan Buddhism.
The rest of the top ten is a wider map. Ramdev, the Indian yoga guru and businessman, is fourth at 9.1. Bartholomew I, Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople since 1991, Ali Sistani, the senior cleric in Iraq, and Ravi Shankar, the Indian spiritual teacher, are level at 7.6. Raphael Warnock is a Baptist pastor who also sits in the United States Senate for Georgia, Abdul Rahman Al-Sudais is Chief Imam of the Grand Mosque in Makkah, and Joachim Gauck was a Lutheran pastor before becoming President of Germany.
Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle of the Philippines, the Iraqi cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, the televangelist Benny Hinn, the Congolese Nobel laureate Denis Mukwege and Pope Tawadros II of Alexandria complete the fifteen. The living list is less Western than the full one, and far more political.
