The Alive reading for August 2026 removes the scripture, the scientists and the philosophers, and the table turns into a list of memoirists and novelists led by Charles III.
Take the dead out of the literature list and it shrinks to 25 living names, led for August 2026 by Charles III at 22.1. The king's place reflects how the sector tag groups people by attention, and the two names beneath him are the real headline. J. K. Rowling, second at 21.7, and Stephen King, third at 21.6, are the only two novelists in the top ten, and the only two whose fame rests on nothing but the books they wrote.
The rest of the living table is a list of people who became authors after becoming famous for something else. Narendra Modi is fourth at 20.1. Gwyneth Paltrow, fifth at 17.4, and Reese Witherspoon, sixth at 15.8, are actors whose publishing ventures have drawn as much attention as their films. Michelle Obama, ninth at 15.4, and JD Vance, the American vice president, twelfth at 14.5, each hold their place largely on a single memoir. Julie Andrews at thirteenth and Ian McKellen at fourteenth are actors with books to their names.
Two entries owe their fame to advocacy first. Malala Yousafzai, the Pakistani education activist and memoirist who became the youngest Nobel Peace laureate at seventeen, is seventh at 15.6. Greta Thunberg, the Swedish climate activist, is fifteenth. George Soros, the investor and author, is tenth.
Haruki Murakami, born in 1949 and the only working novelist outside the English language in the group, is eleventh at 15. Woody Allen, a filmmaker and writer for seven decades, is eighth. What the Alive reading removes is everyone the standard list was built on: Shakespeare, Einstein, Newton, Darwin, Hawking, Aristotle and Pope Francis. What it leaves is a book world whose living stars are, with three exceptions, famous for other reasons.
