Grand Theft Auto V and San Andreas stand alone in the games table
iFAMOUS Editorial Desk · 1 min read
Two Rockstar titles are the only games the engine measured at global scale for August 2026, and the older of them is more than two decades old.
Grand Theft Auto V is the most famous game in the world for August 2026, and it has exactly one rival in the table. The Rockstar North title, published by Rockstar Games, scores 22.5. Behind it is Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, the 2004 PlayStation 2 release that widened Rockstar's open-world formula, at 17.6. Nothing else was measured in the scope this month.
Two names make a short list, but the pair is instructive. The gap between them is nearly five points, wider than the gap between the top two on the brands or groups tables, and the leader has been on sale since 2013. That is thirteen years of sustained worldwide attention for a single release, something few films and almost no television series manage. San Andreas, a game more than twenty years old, still holds a score not far below the tail of the film and television top fifteen.
The games scope is the smallest in this issue, with a total of two titles, and the reading should be taken as a starting point rather than a ranking of the industry. The engine measures worldwide fame, and what it can measure so far in games is what its sources can see. As coverage widens, the table will fill. For this month, though, the record is plain: the two games the world kept looking at were both set in Rockstar's fictional American cities, and both carry the same three initials.
About this list
This list ranks the most famous games in the world as of August 2026, by overall global fame rather than one month's attention: the top 2 of 2 the rankings measured, frozen as the permanent record of that edition.
Grand Theft Auto V is No. 1 on this list for August 2026.
What famous means here
Fame, in iFAMOUS, is how widely the world knows a name: how recognisable a person's name, face or work is, and how well people know who they are. It is assessed from extensive historical and current public data, some of it reaching back more than twenty years, and it is not merit, talent, importance or popularity on iFANN. The rankings model real-world global fame, not internet fame; the data is the instrument, not the subject. Activity on iFANN itself is excluded.
The month in the title is the date of this edition, not the period measured. The list is a snapshot of overall fame as it stood when the issue was frozen: a name does not lose its place because one month was quiet, and a trending moment alone does not put a name here. Trending attention is published separately on ifann.net.
How the list was ranked
The iFANN Global Fame Rankings combine worldwide Wikipedia readership across languages, worldwide news coverage and search interest anchored against stable reference names, with search history reaching back to 2004. A twelve-month baseline sits behind the current reading and short-lived surges are capped, so the list reflects durable recognition rather than one week of headlines. Rankings are computed daily on ifann.net and frozen on the second day of the following month as that month's issue; a published issue never changes.
