YouTube, Facebook and Instagram: three platforms outrank every government body
iFAMOUS Editorial Desk · 1 min read
The August 2026 brands table is led by the places people spend their days, with the European Union and the United Nations the only non-companies near the top.
YouTube is the most famous brand in the world for August 2026, with a score of 65.2. Launched in February 2005 by three former PayPal employees, Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim, it edges Facebook at 62.7 and Instagram at 59.9, so the three brands the world attends to most are all places where it posts video and photographs. WhatsApp, the messaging service, is sixth at 54, which makes four of the top six Meta or Google properties.
What breaks the run of platforms is not a rival company but two political bodies. The European Union, the union of 27 member states, is fourth at 56.1, and the United Nations, founded in 1945 to prevent another world war, is seventh at 52.2. Netflix, which began in 1997 as a DVD-by-mail service and scrapped late fees two years later, sits between them at fifth.
The hardware and software names cluster just below. Apple and Microsoft tie at 51.6, ChatGPT, released by OpenAI on November 30, 2022, is tenth at 51.5 after less than four years in existence, and LinkedIn is eleventh. Then the list turns industrial: Samsung Electronics, the Korean company that began as Samsung-Sanyo in 1969, Toyota, incorporated in Aichi in 1937, and BMW, which started in Munich building aircraft engines rather than cars. Amazon, founded by Jeff Bezos in 1994 under the name Cadabra, closes the fifteen at 50.
The engine measured 302 brands and organisations in the global scope. The spread from first to fifteenth is fifteen points, narrower than on the people lists, and every name in the group is something that billions of people touch in an ordinary week.

About this list
This list ranks the most famous brands and products in the world as of August 2026, by overall global fame rather than one month's attention: the top 100 of 302 the rankings measured, frozen as the permanent record of that edition.
YouTube is No. 1 on this list for August 2026. Behind YouTube come Facebook and Instagram.
What famous means here
Fame, in iFAMOUS, is how widely the world knows a name: how recognisable a person's name, face or work is, and how well people know who they are. It is assessed from extensive historical and current public data, some of it reaching back more than twenty years, and it is not merit, talent, importance or popularity on iFANN. The rankings model real-world global fame, not internet fame; the data is the instrument, not the subject. Activity on iFANN itself is excluded.
The month in the title is the date of this edition, not the period measured. The list is a snapshot of overall fame as it stood when the issue was frozen: a name does not lose its place because one month was quiet, and a trending moment alone does not put a name here. Trending attention is published separately on ifann.net.
How the list was ranked
The iFANN Global Fame Rankings combine worldwide Wikipedia readership across languages, worldwide news coverage and search interest anchored against stable reference names, with search history reaching back to 2004. A twelve-month baseline sits behind the current reading and short-lived surges are capped, so the list reflects durable recognition rather than one week of headlines. Rankings are computed daily on ifann.net and frozen on the second day of the following month as that month's issue; a published issue never changes.
