Shakespeare third and Rowling sixth on a books list led by Jesus

iFAMOUS Editorial Desk · 1 min read

The August 2026 literature ranking is dominated by the authors of scripture, science and philosophy, and only two of the top fifteen are living writers by trade.

The most famous name in books and literature for August 2026 is Jesus Christ, at 53.6, the highest score in this batch of lists by a wide margin. Albert Einstein is second at 29.1 and William Shakespeare, the first writer by trade, third at 28.8. Isaac Newton is fourth. The sector tag gathers everyone whose fame is bound to the written word, which means scientists, philosophers, statesmen and a king sit alongside novelists on one scale.

That scale is dominated by the dead. Eighty-three names are measured across 22 countries, and only 25 are living. Charles III, at fifth with 22.1, is the first of them, and the two living authors in the group follow directly: J. K. Rowling at 21.7, whose Harry Potter series has sold more than 600 million copies, and Stephen King at 21.6, the American whose name has become shorthand for modern horror. A tenth of a point separates them. Narendra Modi, ninth at 20.1, is the only other living entry.

Pope Francis, who died in April 2025, is eighth at 20.8. Below him the list reads like a syllabus: Mao Zedong and Charles Darwin tied at 19.6, Stephen Hawking and Friedrich Nietzsche tied at 19.5, Thomas Edison at 18.9 and Aristotle at 18.5. The United States supplies 16 of the measured names, Germany 14, and the United Kingdom and France twelve each.

The ranking measures worldwide fame rather than literary quality, and on that measure the book world's fame still rests on people who wrote things other than books. Shakespeare, Rowling and King are the exceptions, and they hold their places on the strength of work rather than office.

    About this list

This list ranks the most famous authors and writers in the world as of August 2026, by overall global fame rather than one month's attention. It is the top 83 of 83 names the rankings measured in this sector, frozen as the permanent record of that edition. This is the standard reading: everyone, living or dead, on one scale. 25 of the 83 listed are living; the Alive reading restricts the same ranking to living people.

Jesus Christ is No. 1 on this list for August 2026. Behind Jesus Christ come Albert Einstein and William Shakespeare.

    What famous means here

Fame, in iFAMOUS, is how widely the world knows a name: how recognisable a person's name, face or work is, and how well people know who they are. It is assessed from extensive historical and current public data, some of it reaching back more than twenty years, and it is not merit, talent, importance or popularity on iFANN. The rankings model real-world global fame, not internet fame; the data is the instrument, not the subject. Activity on iFANN itself is excluded.

The month in the title is the date of this edition, not the period measured. The list is a snapshot of overall fame as it stood when the issue was frozen: a name does not lose its place because one month was quiet, and a trending moment alone does not put a name here. Trending attention is published separately on ifann.net.

    How the list was ranked

The iFANN Global Fame Rankings combine worldwide Wikipedia readership across languages, worldwide news coverage and search interest anchored against stable reference names, with search history reaching back to 2004. A twelve-month baseline sits behind the current reading and short-lived surges are capped, so the list reflects durable recognition rather than one week of headlines. Rankings are computed daily on ifann.net and frozen on the second day of the following month as that month's issue; a published issue never changes.

    About Books & Literature

Books & Literature is one of the sectors the journal ranks every month, alongside every country, origin and region list in this issue. Sector lists use the same rankings and the same scale as The 100, so a name can be compared across sectors and against the world. Authors, publishing, bestsellers and literary fiction.
