Musk, Verstappen and Schumacher lead a living car list that is mostly Formula One

iFAMOUS Editorial Desk · 1 min read

The Alive reading for August 2026 drops Elizabeth II, Henry Ford and Ayrton Senna, and the racing drivers move up to claim ten of fifteen places.

Without Elizabeth II, Henry Ford and Ayrton Senna, the car culture list for August 2026 becomes what its name suggests: a table of people who build, drive or talk about cars. Elon Musk still leads the 23 living names at 29.4. Max Verstappen, the Dutch-Belgian Red Bull driver, moves up to second at 20.4, and Michael Schumacher is third at 19.7, a reminder that his fame has held long after his last race.

Fernando Alonso is fourth at 17.7, and from there the grid fills in. Carlos Sainz Jr. is seventh, Oscar Piastri of McLaren ninth, and Sebastian Vettel and Valtteri Bottas tenth and eleventh. Three drivers appear here who did not make the standard top fifteen: Kimi Räikkönen of Finland at twelfth, Charles Leclerc, the Monégasque Ferrari driver, at thirteenth, and Sergio Pérez of Mexico at fourteenth. Finland, with Bottas and Räikkönen, has two of the eleven drivers in the group, which is a large share for a country of its size.

The non-drivers are a smaller set than before. Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, formerly Prince Andrew, is fifth, and Jeremy Clarkson, the English presenter, journalist and farmer, sixth at 15.5. Lightning McQueen, the Pixar character, holds eighth at 13.4, an entry that shows the sector tag follows attention wherever the world puts it. Patrick Dempsey, the American actor who also races cars, closes the list at fifteenth.

Germany, which supplied the most names on the standard scale, keeps Schumacher and Vettel. Spain has Alonso and Sainz. The living reading is a European list with an American at the top, and its story is that no current driver, not even a reigning champion, is yet as famous as the man who sells electric cars.

    About this list

This list ranks the most famous car culture personalities in the world as of August 2026, by overall global fame rather than one month's attention. It is the top 23 of 23 names the rankings measured in this sector, frozen as the permanent record of that edition. This is the Alive reading: living people only. The standard reading ranks everyone, living or dead, on one scale, and is one click away.

Elon Musk is No. 1 on this list for August 2026. Behind Elon Musk come Max Verstappen and Michael Schumacher.

    What famous means here

Fame, in iFAMOUS, is how widely the world knows a name: how recognisable a person's name, face or work is, and how well people know who they are. It is assessed from extensive historical and current public data, some of it reaching back more than twenty years, and it is not merit, talent, importance or popularity on iFANN. The rankings model real-world global fame, not internet fame; the data is the instrument, not the subject. Activity on iFANN itself is excluded.

The month in the title is the date of this edition, not the period measured. The list is a snapshot of overall fame as it stood when the issue was frozen: a name does not lose its place because one month was quiet, and a trending moment alone does not put a name here. Trending attention is published separately on ifann.net.

    How the list was ranked

The iFANN Global Fame Rankings combine worldwide Wikipedia readership across languages, worldwide news coverage and search interest anchored against stable reference names, with search history reaching back to 2004. A twelve-month baseline sits behind the current reading and short-lived surges are capped, so the list reflects durable recognition rather than one week of headlines. Rankings are computed daily on ifann.net and frozen on the second day of the following month as that month's issue; a published issue never changes.

    About Automotive / Car Culture

Automotive / Car Culture is one of the sectors the journal ranks every month, alongside every country, origin and region list in this issue. Sector lists use the same rankings and the same scale as The 100, so a name can be compared across sectors and against the world. Cars, manufacturers, racing crossover and the wider automotive enthusiast world.
