King leads the pastors by ten points as the dead fill the table

Ten of the fifteen most famous pastors are no longer living, John Calvin is second five centuries on, and the first living name is a US senator.
Martin Luther King Jr. is the most famous pastor in the world for August 2026, with a score of 21.5, nearly twice that of anyone else on the list. The Baptist minister and civil rights leader died in 1968. John Calvin, the French reformer who died in 1564, is second at 11.1, and Dietrich Bonhoeffer, the German Lutheran pastor executed by the Nazi regime in 1945, third at 9.5. The three most famous pastors have been dead for 58, 462 and 81 years respectively.
That pattern holds through the table. Ten of the fifteen are dead, and 38 of the 98 measured. Solomon Burke, the soul singer who was also a pastor, is fourth at 7.6. Jim Jones, the Peoples Temple cult leader, is seventh at 6.5; Jerry Falwell, the Lynchburg televangelist, eighth; Jesse Jackson, the civil rights minister, ninth. Maximilian Kolbe, the Polish friar who gave his life at Auschwitz, is twelfth, Jimmy Swaggart fourteenth, and David Yonggi Cho, who built the Yoido Full Gospel Church in Seoul into the world's largest congregation, fifteenth.
The living arrive at fifth. Raphael Warnock, Georgia's junior senator and a Baptist pastor, scores 7.3. Joachim Gauck, the former Lutheran pastor who was president of Germany from 2012 to 2017, is sixth at 7.1. Denis Mukwege, the Congolese gynaecologist and Nobel laureate, is tenth. Joel Osteen of Lakewood Church in Houston, eleventh at 5.6, and Joyce Meyer, thirteenth, are the only working megachurch figures in the fifteen.
Ninety-eight names were measured across 28 countries, 60 living. The United States supplies 27, Nigeria seven, Germany six. The ranking measures worldwide fame rather than quality, and attention to the pulpit runs backward into history.
