Sixty living names remain once King, Calvin and Bonhoeffer leave the table, and the Alive reading is dominated by pastors who went into politics.
With Martin Luther King Jr., John Calvin and Dietrich Bonhoeffer absent, the living pastors list for August 2026 opens with two men better known for public office. Raphael Warnock, the Baptist pastor who serves as Georgia's junior United States senator, leads at 7.3. Joachim Gauck, the Lutheran pastor who became the eleventh president of Germany, is second at 7.1. Between them and the first megachurch name sits Denis Mukwege, the Congolese gynaecologist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, at 6.2.
The megachurch and television names follow. Joel Osteen, who leads Lakewood Church in Houston, is fourth at 5.6. Joyce Meyer, president of the ministry that carries her name, is fifth at 5.3. Then a gap of a point and a half to Apollo Quiboloy, the Filipino religious leader, at 3.7. Rick Warren, the evangelical author, and David Oyedepo, the Nigerian founder of Winners' Chapel, share 3.6. Joseph Prince of Singapore's New Creation Church and Franklin Graham, who leads the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association and Samaritan's Purse, are on 3.4. Chris Oyakhilome of Christ Embassy is thirteenth.
Politics runs through the whole list. Cori Bush, the nurse and ordained pastor who represented Missouri's first district until 2025, is ninth at 3.6. Emanuel Cleaver, the United Methodist pastor in Congress since 2005, is fifteenth. Marco Antonio Rodríguez, tenth, is a Mexican former football referee turned pastor, and Darlene Zschech, fourteenth, the Australian worship leader who wrote Shout to the Lord.
