Carlsen and Zverev top an Olympic list spread across 39 countries

iFAMOUS Editorial Desk · 1 min read

A chess grandmaster and a tennis player lead the sector, Michael Phelps is the most famous Olympian proper at fourth, and no other list this month is so widely shared.

Magnus Carlsen is the most famous name in the Olympic sports sector for August 2026, with a score of 21.5. The Norwegian grandmaster has held the world's top chess ranking for over a decade, and the sector gathers adjacent figures wherever attention groups them, so he sits above every medallist measured. Alexander Zverev, the German tennis player and a fixture of the top ten for nearly ten years, is second at 20.4, and Anne, the Princess Royal, third at 14.6.

Michael Phelps, fourth at 14.5, is the most famous Olympian by any ordinary definition: 28 medals over four Games, 23 of them gold. Simone Biles, the American gymnast, is fifth at 12.5, and Usain Bolt, the Jamaican whose 9.58 seconds over 100 metres still stands, ninth at 11.6. Armand Duplantis, the Swedish pole vaulter who raised the world record again this year, is thirteenth at 11.1, level with Viswanathan Anand, the Indian grandmaster, and one place ahead of Nadia Comăneci, the five-time Olympic champion, at 11.

Between them are careers that touched the Games from unusual angles: Oscar Pistorius, the South African sprinter who competed at both the Paralympics and the Olympics, sixth at 12; Ronda Rousey, the judoka who became a wrestler and fighter, seventh; Ronnie Coleman, the bodybuilder, eighth; Nirmal Purja, the Nepalese mountaineer, tenth; Andy Murray, the British tennis player now coaching, eleventh; Steffi Graf fifteenth.

Eighty-eight names were measured across 39 countries, more than any other sector in this issue, and 81 are living. No country supplies more than seven. The engine measures worldwide fame rather than quality, and Olympic attention, fittingly, belongs to no single nation.

    About this list

This list ranks the most famous olympic athletes in the world as of August 2026, by overall global fame rather than one month's attention. It is the top 88 of 88 names the rankings measured in this sector, frozen as the permanent record of that edition. This is the standard reading: everyone, living or dead, on one scale. 81 of the 88 listed are living; the Alive reading restricts the same ranking to living people.

Magnus Carlsen is No. 1 on this list for August 2026. Behind Magnus Carlsen come Alexander Zverev and Anne, Princess Royal.

    What famous means here

Fame, in iFAMOUS, is how widely the world knows a name: how recognisable a person's name, face or work is, and how well people know who they are. It is assessed from extensive historical and current public data, some of it reaching back more than twenty years, and it is not merit, talent, importance or popularity on iFANN. The rankings model real-world global fame, not internet fame; the data is the instrument, not the subject. Activity on iFANN itself is excluded.

The month in the title is the date of this edition, not the period measured. The list is a snapshot of overall fame as it stood when the issue was frozen: a name does not lose its place because one month was quiet, and a trending moment alone does not put a name here. Trending attention is published separately on ifann.net.

    How the list was ranked

The iFANN Global Fame Rankings combine worldwide Wikipedia readership across languages, worldwide news coverage and search interest anchored against stable reference names, with search history reaching back to 2004. A twelve-month baseline sits behind the current reading and short-lived surges are capped, so the list reflects durable recognition rather than one week of headlines. Rankings are computed daily on ifann.net and frozen on the second day of the following month as that month's issue; a published issue never changes.

    About Olympic Sports

Olympic Sports is one of the sectors the journal ranks every month, alongside every country, origin and region list in this issue. Sector lists use the same rankings and the same scale as The 100, so a name can be compared across sectors and against the world. Athletics, swimming, gymnastics and other Olympic disciplines.

    Powered by iFANN

iFAMOUS is published by iFANN and powered by the iFANN Global Fame Rankings v5.62. Today's live standing for this list is on ifann.net; the journal freezes it once a month so it can be cited permanently.
