From Comăneci in 1976 to Duplantis in 2026, the living Olympians hold their places

iFAMOUS Editorial Desk · 1 min read

With none of the sector's seven dead names in the top fifteen, the Alive reading of Olympic sports is the same table, read as fifty years of careers.

The Alive reading of the Olympic sports sector for August 2026 returns the standard fifteen intact. Eighty-one of the 88 names measured are living, and the seven who are not all sit below the top of the table, so Magnus Carlsen still leads at 21.5, Alexander Zverev is second at 20.4, and Anne, the Princess Royal, third at 14.6. Read as a list of the living, it becomes a list of the eras that are still with us.

The oldest career in the fifteen belongs to Nadia Comăneci, the Romanian-American gymnast whose five Olympic golds date from the 1970s; she is fourteenth at 11. Steffi Graf, the German tennis champion of the 1980s and 1990s, is fifteenth at 10.6. Ronnie Coleman, eighth, dominated bodybuilding through the late 1990s and 2000s. Michael Phelps, fourth at 14.5, and Usain Bolt, ninth at 11.6, are the two names who defined the Games of the 2000s and 2010s, and both are retired.

The current era is thinner but present. Simone Biles, fifth at 12.5, is still competing. Armand Duplantis, thirteenth at 11.1, holds the pole vault world record as of this year. Zverev and Carlsen, the two at the top, are both active, and Nirmal Purja, tenth, is a mountaineer still guiding at altitude. Andy Murray, eleventh, has moved from the court to coaching.

Oscar Pistorius, sixth, and Ronda Rousey, seventh, hold places their sporting records alone would not explain; the ranking measures worldwide fame rather than quality. Viswanathan Anand, twelfth, and Carlsen bookend the chess presence the sector gathers as adjacent. Across 39 countries, the living Olympic list has no home nation, and no decade it belongs to.

    About this list

This list ranks the most famous olympic athletes in the world as of August 2026, by overall global fame rather than one month's attention. It is the top 81 of 81 names the rankings measured in this sector, frozen as the permanent record of that edition. This is the Alive reading: living people only. The standard reading ranks everyone, living or dead, on one scale, and is one click away.

Magnus Carlsen is No. 1 on this list for August 2026. Behind Magnus Carlsen come Alexander Zverev and Anne, Princess Royal.

    What famous means here

Fame, in iFAMOUS, is how widely the world knows a name: how recognisable a person's name, face or work is, and how well people know who they are. It is assessed from extensive historical and current public data, some of it reaching back more than twenty years, and it is not merit, talent, importance or popularity on iFANN. The rankings model real-world global fame, not internet fame; the data is the instrument, not the subject. Activity on iFANN itself is excluded.

The month in the title is the date of this edition, not the period measured. The list is a snapshot of overall fame as it stood when the issue was frozen: a name does not lose its place because one month was quiet, and a trending moment alone does not put a name here. Trending attention is published separately on ifann.net.

    How the list was ranked

The iFANN Global Fame Rankings combine worldwide Wikipedia readership across languages, worldwide news coverage and search interest anchored against stable reference names, with search history reaching back to 2004. A twelve-month baseline sits behind the current reading and short-lived surges are capped, so the list reflects durable recognition rather than one week of headlines. Rankings are computed daily on ifann.net and frozen on the second day of the following month as that month's issue; a published issue never changes.

    About Olympic Sports

Olympic Sports is one of the sectors the journal ranks every month, alongside every country, origin and region list in this issue. Sector lists use the same rankings and the same scale as The 100, so a name can be compared across sectors and against the world. Athletics, swimming, gymnastics and other Olympic disciplines.
