Berners-Lee, not Buterin, holds the top of a list built on blockchains
iFAMOUS Editorial Desk · 1 min read
The inventor of the World Wide Web outscores every exchange founder and token creator in the August 2026 crypto ranking.
Tim Berners-Lee is the most famous name in Crypto and Web3 for August 2026, which says something about how the world files this sector. The British computer scientist who invented the World Wide Web at CERN in 1989 holds a score of 11.1, ahead of Vitalik Buterin, the Russian-Canadian co-founder of Ethereum, at 9.2. The sector gathers adjacent figures, and the web's own architect is the most prominent of them.
The exchange founders arrive next, and they arrive together. Changpeng Zhao, the Canadian entrepreneur who co-founded Binance, and Sam Bankman-Fried, the American who co-founded FTX and is now a convicted felon, share a score of 7.9 at third and fourth. Attention does not distinguish between the exchange that survived and the one that collapsed. Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal, the Saudi investor, sits fifth, and Michael Saylor, the American executive who turned himself into Bitcoin's loudest advocate, is sixth at 5.5.
Below them the list mixes builders and theorists. Adi Shamir, the Israeli cryptographer whose work underpins modern digital security, is seventh. Charles Hoskinson and Brian Armstrong, the Coinbase co-founder, tie at 4.3. The Winklevoss twins, both former Olympic rowers, are inseparable at 3.8, and Arthur Hayes of BitMEX and the British financier George Cottrell close the top fifteen.
Thirty names were measured across eleven countries, and 29 of them are living. The United States supplies twelve, the United Kingdom four and Israel two. The ranking measures worldwide fame, not merit, and in this sector attention still belongs first to the man who built the network everything else runs on.
About this list
This list ranks the most famous crypto and web3 leaders in the world as of August 2026, by overall global fame rather than one month's attention. It is the top 30 of 30 names the rankings measured in this sector, frozen as the permanent record of that edition. This is the standard reading: everyone, living or dead, on one scale. 29 of the 30 listed are living; the Alive reading restricts the same ranking to living people.
Tim Berners-Lee is No. 1 on this list for August 2026. Behind Tim Berners-Lee come Vitalik Buterin and Changpeng Zhao.
What famous means here
Fame, in iFAMOUS, is how widely the world knows a name: how recognisable a person's name, face or work is, and how well people know who they are. It is assessed from extensive historical and current public data, some of it reaching back more than twenty years, and it is not merit, talent, importance or popularity on iFANN. The rankings model real-world global fame, not internet fame; the data is the instrument, not the subject. Activity on iFANN itself is excluded.
The month in the title is the date of this edition, not the period measured. The list is a snapshot of overall fame as it stood when the issue was frozen: a name does not lose its place because one month was quiet, and a trending moment alone does not put a name here. Trending attention is published separately on ifann.net.
How the list was ranked
The iFANN Global Fame Rankings combine worldwide Wikipedia readership across languages, worldwide news coverage and search interest anchored against stable reference names, with search history reaching back to 2004. A twelve-month baseline sits behind the current reading and short-lived surges are capped, so the list reflects durable recognition rather than one week of headlines. Rankings are computed daily on ifann.net and frozen on the second day of the following month as that month's issue; a published issue never changes.
About Crypto / Web3
Crypto / Web3 is one of the sectors the journal ranks every month, alongside every country, origin and region list in this issue. Sector lists use the same rankings and the same scale as The 100, so a name can be compared across sectors and against the world. Crypto, Web3, NFTs and decentralized finance.
