Zhao and Bankman-Fried tie as the living crypto list loses almost nobody

iFAMOUS Editorial Desk · 1 min read

Only one of the thirty names measured in Crypto and Web3 has died, so the August 2026 Alive reading is a study of the people still running the sector.

The Alive reading of the Crypto and Web3 list changes almost nothing, and that is the story. Twenty-nine of the thirty names measured for August 2026 are living, so the single absence sits well below the top fifteen and every leader keeps the place held in the standard reading. Tim Berners-Lee, the British computer scientist who invented the World Wide Web at CERN, leads the living at 11.1.

What the living list makes plain is how the sector's own founders cluster. Vitalik Buterin, principal co-founder of Ethereum, is second at 9.2. Changpeng Zhao, known as CZ, who co-founded Binance, and Sam Bankman-Fried, who co-founded FTX and was later convicted, are tied at 7.9. One built the largest exchange by trading volume and the other ran his into the ground, and August 2026 holds them level.

Charles Hoskinson, the Maui-born mathematician and entrepreneur, and Brian Armstrong of Coinbase are also tied, at 4.3. Christopher Harborne, the British-Thai investor who has lived in Thailand for more than two decades, is tenth. Arthur Hayes, who co-founded BitMEX and pioneered 100x leveraged trading, is fourteenth, one place above George Cottrell, the British financier known as Posh George.

Two of the living names are academics rather than operators. Adi Shamir, the Israeli cryptographer, is seventh at 4.4, and Shafi Goldwasser, the computer scientist, is thirteenth. Between them sit the Winklevoss twins, Tyler and Cameron, former Olympic rowers who share a score of 3.8 and, on this evidence, a public that does not tell them apart.

    About this list

This list ranks the most famous crypto and web3 leaders in the world as of August 2026, by overall global fame rather than one month's attention. It is the top 29 of 29 names the rankings measured in this sector, frozen as the permanent record of that edition. This is the Alive reading: living people only. The standard reading ranks everyone, living or dead, on one scale, and is one click away.

Tim Berners-Lee is No. 1 on this list for August 2026. Behind Tim Berners-Lee come Vitalik Buterin and Changpeng Zhao.

    What famous means here

Fame, in iFAMOUS, is how widely the world knows a name: how recognisable a person's name, face or work is, and how well people know who they are. It is assessed from extensive historical and current public data, some of it reaching back more than twenty years, and it is not merit, talent, importance or popularity on iFANN. The rankings model real-world global fame, not internet fame; the data is the instrument, not the subject. Activity on iFANN itself is excluded.

The month in the title is the date of this edition, not the period measured. The list is a snapshot of overall fame as it stood when the issue was frozen: a name does not lose its place because one month was quiet, and a trending moment alone does not put a name here. Trending attention is published separately on ifann.net.

    How the list was ranked

The iFANN Global Fame Rankings combine worldwide Wikipedia readership across languages, worldwide news coverage and search interest anchored against stable reference names, with search history reaching back to 2004. A twelve-month baseline sits behind the current reading and short-lived surges are capped, so the list reflects durable recognition rather than one week of headlines. Rankings are computed daily on ifann.net and frozen on the second day of the following month as that month's issue; a published issue never changes.

    About Crypto / Web3

Crypto / Web3 is one of the sectors the journal ranks every month, alongside every country, origin and region list in this issue. Sector lists use the same rankings and the same scale as The 100, so a name can be compared across sectors and against the world. Crypto, Web3, NFTs and decentralized finance.
