Hugh Jackman edges Chaplin on a comedy list built from movie stars
iFAMOUS Editorial Desk · 1 min read
An Australian who played Wolverine leads the August 2026 comedy table, with a silent-film pioneer, a wartime president and Ryan Reynolds within a point of him.
The most famous name in comedy for August 2026 is Hugh Jackman, at 22.1, and the sector tag explains why: it gathers everyone the world's attention files under making people laugh, which includes an Australian best known for playing Wolverine. The four names behind him are separated by less than a point. Charlie Chaplin, the English comedian and filmmaker who died in 1977, is second at 21.7. Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the former entertainer who has been president of Ukraine since 2019, is third at 21.4. Ryan Reynolds is fourth at 21.1, and Robin Williams, who died in 2014, fifth at 20.3.
Seventy-nine names are measured across eleven countries, and 71 are living. The United States supplies 43, the United Kingdom 15 and Canada eight. Canada's share is out of proportion to its size: Reynolds, Jim Carrey at sixth with 20.2, Rachel McAdams at twelfth and Seth Rogen at fourteenth give it four of the top fifteen.
The comedians by trade sit in the middle. Carrey's rubber-faced physical comedy places him sixth. Adam Sandler, whose films have grossed more than two billion dollars, is seventh at 19, tied with Zac Efron. Rowan Atkinson, born in Consett in 1955, is thirteenth at 16.3, and Woody Allen, a filmmaker and comedian for seven decades, fifteenth. Jamie Foxx and Jake Gyllenhaal tie at 17.1 in tenth and eleventh, and Cate Blanchett is ninth at 18.
The two dead names in the top fifteen are the two most influential. Chaplin and Williams hold their places on recognition that has outlived them, one by nearly fifty years. The ranking measures worldwide fame rather than how funny anyone is. On that scale comedy's fame belongs to actors who work across genres, and the pure stand-ups have to wait for the Alive reading to move up.

About this list
This list ranks the most famous comedians in the world as of August 2026, by overall global fame rather than one month's attention. It is the top 79 of 79 names the rankings measured in this sector, frozen as the permanent record of that edition. This is the standard reading: everyone, living or dead, on one scale. 71 of the 79 listed are living; the Alive reading restricts the same ranking to living people.
Hugh Jackman is No. 1 on this list for August 2026. Behind Hugh Jackman come Charlie Chaplin and Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
What famous means here
Fame, in iFAMOUS, is how widely the world knows a name: how recognisable a person's name, face or work is, and how well people know who they are. It is assessed from extensive historical and current public data, some of it reaching back more than twenty years, and it is not merit, talent, importance or popularity on iFANN. The rankings model real-world global fame, not internet fame; the data is the instrument, not the subject. Activity on iFANN itself is excluded.
The month in the title is the date of this edition, not the period measured. The list is a snapshot of overall fame as it stood when the issue was frozen: a name does not lose its place because one month was quiet, and a trending moment alone does not put a name here. Trending attention is published separately on ifann.net.
How the list was ranked
The iFANN Global Fame Rankings combine worldwide Wikipedia readership across languages, worldwide news coverage and search interest anchored against stable reference names, with search history reaching back to 2004. A twelve-month baseline sits behind the current reading and short-lived surges are capped, so the list reflects durable recognition rather than one week of headlines. Rankings are computed daily on ifann.net and frozen on the second day of the following month as that month's issue; a published issue never changes.
About Comedy
Comedy is one of the sectors the journal ranks every month, alongside every country, origin and region list in this issue. Sector lists use the same rankings and the same scale as The 100, so a name can be compared across sectors and against the world. Comedians, stand-up, sketch and improv: the people and shows that make people laugh.
