Musk edges Einstein on a tech list where the dead nearly outnumber the living

Sixteen names are measured in the August 2026 tech table, and seven of them, from Copernicus to Steve Jobs, are no longer alive.
Elon Musk is the most famous figure in technology for August 2026, but only just. His fame score of 29.4 sits three tenths of a point above Albert Einstein at 29.1, and the physicist has been dead since 1955. That near-tie sets the tone for a list in which the founders of the modern industry share the table with the scientists and inventors who preceded it.
Bill Gates, who co-founded Microsoft in 1975, is third at 25.9, and Mark Zuckerberg, chairman and controlling shareholder of Meta, fourth at 23.3. Steve Jobs, who died in 2011, is fifth at 22.7. Jay-Z, the rapper and executive, is sixth at 21.3, an adjacent figure the sector gathers through his business ventures rather than any product.
The historical names then arrive in a cluster. Nikola Tesla is seventh at 19.1 and Thomas Edison eighth at 18.9, their rivalry apparently still intact a century on, with Jeff Bezos level on Edison's score. Sam Altman and Peter Thiel tie at 18.5. Alan Turing, whose theory underpins computing and artificial intelligence, is twelfth at 16.9, ahead of Pavel Durov of Telegram and Jensen Huang of Nvidia. Nicolaus Copernicus, the astronomer who died in 1543, closes the top fifteen at 15.4.
Only sixteen people were measured across six countries, nine of them living, and nine of the sixteen are American. Germany supplies three, with Einstein and Copernicus counted alongside Thiel. It is a short list, and the shape is clear: worldwide attention to technology still attaches as readily to the dead who explained the world as to the living who are selling it.
