Depp and Dion share the top of a rock list full of borrowed stars
iFAMOUS Editorial Desk · 1 min read
The August 2026 rock and indie table is led by an actor and a ballad singer, with Elvis Presley and Bob Marley the two dead names inside the top ten.
Rock and indie in August 2026 is led by a tie. Johnny Depp, the American actor who fronts a band on the side, and Céline Dion, the Canadian singer known for her power ballads, both hold a fame score of 26.8. Neither is a rock musician in the way a record shop would define one, and that is the first thing to know about this list: the sector gathers adjacent figures, and several of them hold high places.
Elvis Presley is third at 24.3 and Bob Marley, the Jamaican who took reggae to the world, eighth at 22.7. They are the only dead names in the top fifteen, and both rank on durable recognition rather than any new record. Between them sit Harry Styles, the English singer who moved from a boy band to stadium tours, at 23.4, Avril Lavigne, who lit the pop-punk boom of the early 2000s, at 23.2, and Ryan Gosling, another actor with a band, at 22.9.
The guitar heritage proper is here too. Elton John, with more than 300 million records sold, is seventh at 22.8, and Paul McCartney ninth at 22.1. Sting is thirteenth at 20.9 and Robbie Williams fifteenth. Stephen King, the horror novelist, is twelfth, and Hugh Jackman and Lindsay Lohan complete a top group in which the actors nearly outnumber the musicians.
Seventy-four people were measured across fourteen countries, fifty-nine of them living. The United States supplies twenty-eight names and the United Kingdom twenty-six, a near-even split that matches the sector's history, with Canada third on six. Lana Del Rey, eleventh at 21.9, is the most famous name on the list who is unambiguously a working alternative musician.

About this list
This list ranks the most famous rock and indie musicians in the world as of August 2026, by overall global fame rather than one month's attention. It is the top 74 of 74 names the rankings measured in this sector, frozen as the permanent record of that edition. This is the standard reading: everyone, living or dead, on one scale. 59 of the 74 listed are living; the Alive reading restricts the same ranking to living people.
Johnny Depp is No. 1 on this list for August 2026. Behind Johnny Depp come Céline Dion and Elvis Presley.
What famous means here
Fame, in iFAMOUS, is how widely the world knows a name: how recognisable a person's name, face or work is, and how well people know who they are. It is assessed from extensive historical and current public data, some of it reaching back more than twenty years, and it is not merit, talent, importance or popularity on iFANN. The rankings model real-world global fame, not internet fame; the data is the instrument, not the subject. Activity on iFANN itself is excluded.
The month in the title is the date of this edition, not the period measured. The list is a snapshot of overall fame as it stood when the issue was frozen: a name does not lose its place because one month was quiet, and a trending moment alone does not put a name here. Trending attention is published separately on ifann.net.
How the list was ranked
The iFANN Global Fame Rankings combine worldwide Wikipedia readership across languages, worldwide news coverage and search interest anchored against stable reference names, with search history reaching back to 2004. A twelve-month baseline sits behind the current reading and short-lived surges are capped, so the list reflects durable recognition rather than one week of headlines. Rankings are computed daily on ifann.net and frozen on the second day of the following month as that month's issue; a published issue never changes.
About Rock & Indie
Rock & Indie is one of the sectors the journal ranks every month, alongside every country, origin and region list in this issue. Sector lists use the same rankings and the same scale as The 100, so a name can be compared across sectors and against the world. Rock, indie, alternative, punk and everything that needs a guitar.

iFAMOUS is published by iFANN and powered by the iFANN Global Fame Rankings v5.62. Today's live standing for this list is on ifann.net; the journal freezes it once a month so it can be cited permanently.
