Clapton leads a metal list where Ozzy Osbourne holds second after his death
iFAMOUS Editorial Desk · 1 min read
A blues guitarist tops the sector, the Black Sabbath frontman is second, and Metallica places three members in the fifteen.
Eric Clapton is the most famous name in the metal sector for August 2026, with a score of 19. The English guitarist is the only three-time inductee into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and a blues player by trade, one of the adjacent figures this sector gathers where attention groups heavy music together. Ozzy Osbourne, the Black Sabbath singer who died in 2025, is second at 17.7, and XXXTentacion, the Florida rapper who died in 2018, third at 17.
The living rock veterans follow in a tight column. Jon Bon Jovi is fourth at 14.8, Alice Cooper, who merged hard rock with horror-movie theatre, fifth at 14.5, and Slash, the London-born Guns N' Roses guitarist, sixth at 14.2. Robert Plant, the Led Zeppelin singer, is seventh at 13.7. Axl Rose, Slash's frontman, is twelfth at 12.1, so the band has two members in the fifteen.
Metallica has three. James Hetfield, the band's co-founder and singer, is eighth at 13.1, level with Dave Grohl. Lars Ulrich, the Danish drummer who co-founded the band, is eleventh at 12.2, and Kirk Hammett, its lead guitarist since 1983, fourteenth at 10.8. Tony Iommi, who co-founded Black Sabbath in 1968, is thirteenth at 11.2, so both halves of the Sabbath partnership sit in the table, one living and one not. Steven Tyler of Aerosmith is tenth, Tom Morello fifteenth.
Sixty-nine names were measured across fifteen countries, 61 of them living. The United States supplies 26, the United Kingdom nine and Germany six. The ranking measures worldwide fame, not quality, and this month the two dead names near the top hold more of it than most of the living.

About this list
This list ranks the most famous metal musicians in the world as of August 2026, by overall global fame rather than one month's attention. It is the top 69 of 69 names the rankings measured in this sector, frozen as the permanent record of that edition. This is the standard reading: everyone, living or dead, on one scale. 61 of the 69 listed are living; the Alive reading restricts the same ranking to living people.
Eric Clapton is No. 1 on this list for August 2026. Behind Eric Clapton come Ozzy Osbourne and XXXTentacion.
What famous means here
Fame, in iFAMOUS, is how widely the world knows a name: how recognisable a person's name, face or work is, and how well people know who they are. It is assessed from extensive historical and current public data, some of it reaching back more than twenty years, and it is not merit, talent, importance or popularity on iFANN. The rankings model real-world global fame, not internet fame; the data is the instrument, not the subject. Activity on iFANN itself is excluded.
The month in the title is the date of this edition, not the period measured. The list is a snapshot of overall fame as it stood when the issue was frozen: a name does not lose its place because one month was quiet, and a trending moment alone does not put a name here. Trending attention is published separately on ifann.net.
How the list was ranked
The iFANN Global Fame Rankings combine worldwide Wikipedia readership across languages, worldwide news coverage and search interest anchored against stable reference names, with search history reaching back to 2004. A twelve-month baseline sits behind the current reading and short-lived surges are capped, so the list reflects durable recognition rather than one week of headlines. Rankings are computed daily on ifann.net and frozen on the second day of the following month as that month's issue; a published issue never changes.
About Metal
Metal is one of the sectors the journal ranks every month, alongside every country, origin and region list in this issue. Sector lists use the same rankings and the same scale as The 100, so a name can be compared across sectors and against the world. Heavy metal, thrash, death, doom, prog and everything in between.
Powered by iFANN
iFAMOUS is published by iFANN and powered by the iFANN Global Fame Rankings v5.62. Today's live standing for this list is on ifann.net; the journal freezes it once a month so it can be cited permanently.
