Miyazaki leads manga, and Toriyama holds third two years after his death

Japan supplies 71 of the 78 names in the sector, and three of the fifteen at the top are artists who are no longer living.
Hayao Miyazaki is the most famous figure in the manga sector for August 2026. The animator and Studio Ghibli co-founder, who began as a manga artist before his films made him a household name worldwide, posts a score of 15.8. Eiichiro Oda, creator of One Piece, the biggest-selling manga series in history, is second at 13. Akira Toriyama, the Dragon Ball artist who died in 2024, is third at 12.9, a tenth of a point behind Oda.
Masashi Kishimoto, who created Naruto, is fourth at 10.9, and then the table falls away. Gosho Aoyama, the artist behind the long-running Detective Conan, is fifth at 7.3; Mackenyu, the Japanese actor who has played manga and anime characters on screen, sixth at 7.2. The four names at the top hold more attention than the next eleven combined, which fits a medium whose global reach rests on a handful of long series.
Two more of the dead sit in the top fifteen. Osamu Tezuka, the artist and animator who shaped Japanese comics after the war, is seventh at 6.4. Kentaro Miura, whose Berserk defined dark fantasy in the medium, is fifteenth at 4.6. Between them are Junji Itō, the horror master, at eighth; Tite Kubo of Bleach at ninth; Yoshihiro Togashi, Naoki Urasawa, Hiromu Arakawa and Rumiko Takahashi bunched between 5.3 and 5.2; and Hajime Isayama of Attack on Titan at fourteenth.
Seventy-eight names were measured, 72 of them living, and 71 are Japanese; the United States, Thailand and South Korea supply one each. The engine records worldwide fame rather than quality, and attention to manga is, for now, attention to Japan.
