Bloom, Jackson and Tolkien share the top of a list only thirteen names long

The Middle-earth sector is the smallest in the August issue, and its dead author sits third among the actors who put his books on screen.
Orlando Bloom is the most famous name in the Lord of the Rings sector for August 2026, though only on a tie-break. The English actor who played Legolas posts a score of 15.8, the same number as Peter Jackson, the New Zealand filmmaker who directed the trilogy, and the two are placed first and second. J. R. R. Tolkien, the English writer and Oxford scholar whose books started all of it, is third at 15.3, the only dead name in a table of thirteen.
The film company fills the rest. Sir Ian McKellen, the classical stage actor who became Gandalf, is fourth at 14. Karl Urban, the New Zealand actor, is fifth at 12.4, and Andy Serkis, the English actor and director who reinvented performance capture as Gollum, sixth at 11.4. Then the table drops. Howard Shore, the Canadian composer who scored the films, is seventh at 7.1, a fall of more than four points from the place above him.
Below Shore are the hobbits and the supporting cast: Dominic Monaghan, who played Merry and later Charlie Pace on Lost, at 6.3; Manu Bennett at 6; Billy Boyd, the Scottish actor and musician born in Glasgow in 1968, at 5.5; Hugo Weaving, the Australian-British actor, at 5.4. Jed Brophy, a fixture of Jackson's productions, is twelfth at 3.2, and Adam Brown, who played the dwarf Ori in The Hobbit, closes the list at 1.4.
Thirteen names were measured across six countries, twelve of them living. The United Kingdom supplies five and New Zealand three. It is a list that measures worldwide fame rather than quality, and the attention here belongs almost entirely to one set of films made a quarter of a century ago.
