Ken Watanabe tops the August 2026 J-Drama list at 8.5, on a table where three figures from Japanese history rank alongside working actors.
Ken Watanabe is the most famous name in Japanese drama for August 2026, with a score of 8.5. The actor whose commanding presence made him Japan's most recognised international star leads Mackenyu, the Japanese actor who has built a career on manga and anime adaptations, at 7.2, and Chiaki Kuriyama, the actress and singer known for action and horror, at 6.5.
Fourth is Date Masamune, a daimyo of the Sengoku period and the first lord of Sendai, at 5.3. He has been dead for nearly four centuries. Emperor Antoku is seventh at 4.4, and Ashikaga Yoshimasa, the eighth shogun of his line, who died in 1490, is eleventh at 3.1. The sector gathers adjacent figures, and in Japan the attention around historical drama attaches to the people it dramatises as much as to the people who play them.
The working actors fill the rest. Shun Oguri, actor, voice actor and director, and Tomohisa Yamashita, the singer and host, tie at 4.6. Takeru Satō, one of the most bankable stars in the country, is eighth at 4.1. Yu Aoi, widely considered one of the finest performers of her generation, is ninth at 3.4, and Kento Yamazaki, the leading man of live-action manga, tenth. Kōji Yakusho, Nana Komatsu, Ryūsei Yokohama and Takayuki Yamada close the fifteen between 2.9 and 1.9.
Thirty-two names were measured, 28 of them living, and only three countries appear: Japan with 29, and one name each from the United States and Taiwan. This is a list with almost no reach beyond one country, and its scores are modest next to the Korean and Chinese lists, a measure of worldwide attention rather than of the drama itself.
