Bure joins the living hockey list as five Russians crowd the fifteen
iFAMOUS Editorial Desk · 1 min read
Lev Yashin's absence in the August 2026 Alive reading brings Pavel Bure in at fifteenth and makes Russia the best-represented country at the top of ice hockey.
Lev Yashin, the Soviet goalkeeper, is the only dead name in the ice hockey top fifteen, and his removal for the Alive reading of August 2026 admits Pavel Bure, the Russian who lit up the NHL with speed and a lethal shot, at fifteenth with 5.2. That gives Russia five of the fifteen living leaders: Alexander Ovechkin third at 9.6, Evgeni Malkin eighth at 6.5, Sergei Fedorov tenth at 6.3, Kirill Kaprizov eleventh at 5.8 and Bure.
Petr Čech leads the living at 11.9. The Czech former football goalkeeper who now tends goal on the ice is an adjacent figure the sector gathers, and he outranks Wayne Gretzky at 10.4. Behind them the Canadian core of the sport's history is intact: Gretzky, Sidney Crosby fourth at 8.3, Mario Lemieux ninth at 6.3 and Bobby Orr thirteenth at 5.5. Taylor Kitsch, the Canadian actor, sits fifth among them.
Pittsburgh runs through the table. Crosby captains the Penguins, Malkin has spent his entire NHL career there, and Lemieux played for and then owned the franchise. Three of the fifteen living leaders belong to one club. Leon Draisaitl of Edmonton, sixth at 6.9, and David Pastrňák of Boston, fourteenth at 5.2, are the current NHL forwards from outside that circle, and Jaromír Jágr, seventh, still plays for the Czech club he owns.
Eighty-five of the 89 names measured are living. Finland supplies 26 of them, the most of any country, and not one Finn reaches the top fifteen, while Czechia's eight names produce three leaders. Princess Muna Al Hussein of Jordan, twelfth at 5.6, is the one living name in the fifteen with no playing or acting career at all.
About this list
This list ranks the most famous ice hockey players in the world as of August 2026, by overall global fame rather than one month's attention. It is the top 85 of 85 names the rankings measured in this sector, frozen as the permanent record of that edition. This is the Alive reading: living people only. The standard reading ranks everyone, living or dead, on one scale, and is one click away.
Petr Čech is No. 1 on this list for August 2026. Behind Petr Čech come Wayne Gretzky and Alexander Ovechkin.
What famous means here
Fame, in iFAMOUS, is how widely the world knows a name: how recognisable a person's name, face or work is, and how well people know who they are. It is assessed from extensive historical and current public data, some of it reaching back more than twenty years, and it is not merit, talent, importance or popularity on iFANN. The rankings model real-world global fame, not internet fame; the data is the instrument, not the subject. Activity on iFANN itself is excluded.
The month in the title is the date of this edition, not the period measured. The list is a snapshot of overall fame as it stood when the issue was frozen: a name does not lose its place because one month was quiet, and a trending moment alone does not put a name here. Trending attention is published separately on ifann.net.
How the list was ranked
The iFANN Global Fame Rankings combine worldwide Wikipedia readership across languages, worldwide news coverage and search interest anchored against stable reference names, with search history reaching back to 2004. A twelve-month baseline sits behind the current reading and short-lived surges are capped, so the list reflects durable recognition rather than one week of headlines. Rankings are computed daily on ifann.net and frozen on the second day of the following month as that month's issue; a published issue never changes.
About Ice Hockey
Ice Hockey is one of the sectors the journal ranks every month, alongside every country, origin and region list in this issue. Sector lists use the same rankings and the same scale as The 100, so a name can be compared across sectors and against the world. NHL and international ice hockey.
