Without Tupac and Elvis, Combs and Hilton enter hip-hop's living fifteen
iFAMOUS Editorial Desk · 1 min read
The August 2026 Alive reading of the Hip-Hop list drops two dead names from the top and closes with Paris Hilton and Sean Combs at the bottom of the table.
Two names leave the hip-hop top fifteen when the dead are set aside for August 2026: Tupac Shakur, who was eighth, and Elvis Presley, who was tenth. The living reading pulls Paris Hilton, the socialite and media personality, into fourteenth at 21.9, and Sean Combs, the former rapper and executive known as Diddy, into fifteenth at 21.7. Eighty-two of the 89 names measured are living.
Among the living, the genre's own rappers hold six of fifteen places. Eminem is the highest at fourth with 32.8. Drake, sixth at 27.3, and Ye, seventh at 26.5, follow. 50 Cent, eleventh at 23.2, is level with Will Smith, whose rap career preceded a film career of more than ten billion dollars in grosses, and Combs closes the table. Every one of them sits below Rihanna at 34.7, Shakira at 33.8 and Beyoncé at 32.9.
Tupac's absence matters more than Elvis's. Shakur was the only dead rapper among the leaders, and with him gone the earliest rap era left in the fifteen is Will Smith's, whose records as a rapper date to the late 1980s. Jennifer Lopez, fifth at 32.3, and Mariah Carey, tenth at 23.3, are singers whose careers ran alongside the genre's biggest era. John Cena, eighth at 25, and Chris Brown, ninth at 23.4, sit between them.
Sixteen countries are represented among the living, with the United States at sixty names and South Korea at eleven. No South Korean rapper reaches the top fifteen, and no European or African name does either. Lana Del Rey, thirteenth at 21.9, ties Hilton on the score. The living list is American, and it is fronted by singers.
About this list
This list ranks the most famous hip-hop artists and rappers in the world as of August 2026, by overall global fame rather than one month's attention. It is the top 82 of 82 names the rankings measured in this sector, frozen as the permanent record of that edition. This is the Alive reading: living people only. The standard reading ranks everyone, living or dead, on one scale, and is one click away.
Rihanna is No. 1 on this list for August 2026. Behind Rihanna come Shakira and Beyoncé.
What famous means here
Fame, in iFAMOUS, is how widely the world knows a name: how recognisable a person's name, face or work is, and how well people know who they are. It is assessed from extensive historical and current public data, some of it reaching back more than twenty years, and it is not merit, talent, importance or popularity on iFANN. The rankings model real-world global fame, not internet fame; the data is the instrument, not the subject. Activity on iFANN itself is excluded.
The month in the title is the date of this edition, not the period measured. The list is a snapshot of overall fame as it stood when the issue was frozen: a name does not lose its place because one month was quiet, and a trending moment alone does not put a name here. Trending attention is published separately on ifann.net.
How the list was ranked
The iFANN Global Fame Rankings combine worldwide Wikipedia readership across languages, worldwide news coverage and search interest anchored against stable reference names, with search history reaching back to 2004. A twelve-month baseline sits behind the current reading and short-lived surges are capped, so the list reflects durable recognition rather than one week of headlines. Rankings are computed daily on ifann.net and frozen on the second day of the following month as that month's issue; a published issue never changes.
About Hip-Hop
Hip-Hop is one of the sectors the journal ranks every month, alongside every country, origin and region list in this issue. Sector lists use the same rankings and the same scale as The 100, so a name can be compared across sectors and against the world. Rap, hip-hop and drill across every era and region.
