The Alive reading for August 2026 loses the four artists who built the medium and puts an actor first, with Frank Miller the highest-placed living creator.
Stan Lee, Steve Ditko, Jack Kirby and Joe Shuster are the four names the Alive reading removes from the Western comics list for August 2026, and between them they were the co-creators of Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four and Superman. What remains is a list of 25 living names led by an actor. Mark Hamill, the voice of the Joker across decades of animated adaptations as well as the original Luke Skywalker, is first at 11.7.
The first living creator is Frank Miller, second at 8.7, whose writing and art reshaped Batman and Daredevil and who has also directed films. Thomas Jane, an actor, is third at 8.6, and Joss Whedon, who has written comics alongside television and film, fourth at 8.5. Iman Vellani, the Canadian actress of Pakistani descent who plays Ms. Marvel and now writes the character's comics, is fifth at 7.1.
The writers by trade fill the lower half. Garth Ennis, the Northern Irish creator of Preacher and The Boys, is seventh at 6. Chris Claremont, the English-born writer regarded as the most influential in X-Men history, is eleventh at 3.8. Jonathan Hickman, born in South Carolina in 1972, is thirteenth at 3.3, and Gary Larson, whose single-panel strip The Far Side ran in more than 1,900 newspapers, fourteenth at 3.2. David Morrell, the Canadian-American novelist who created John Rambo in First Blood, is fifteenth at 2.6.
One entry is fictional. Mister Sinister, the Marvel geneticist and X-Men villain, holds twelfth at 3.4, ahead of Hickman and Larson, which is a fair measure of how much attention a character can draw on his own. The scores are modest and the reading measures fame rather than craft, but the picture is plain: in the living comics world the adaptations are more famous than the people still drawing the source.
