Davido tops Africa's living list as Mandela's absence reshuffles the table

Without the late South African president, a Nigerian singer and Ghana's head of state lead the August 2026 reading of the continent's living names.
Davido is the most famous living person in the African table for August 2026. The Nigerian singer, songwriter and producer scores 37.1, four points ahead of John Mahama, the President of Ghana, at 33.2. Jacob Zuma, who served as South Africa's president from 2009 to 2018, is the highest-placed living South African at fourth, with Shakira between him and Mahama.
The absences explain the shape. Nelson Mandela, first on the standard reading by a wide margin, is gone from this one, and so are Muhammadu Buhari, the former Nigerian president, and Michael Jackson. Their removal pulls every name up, and it changes what the top looks like: where the full table opens with a statesman, the living one opens with a pop star, and the first four are a Nigerian, a Ghanaian, a Colombian and a South African.
Nigeria's musicians occupy more of the upper table than any other group. Wizkid, born Ayodeji Balogun, is seventh at 29.1, and Burna Boy, from Rivers State, ninth at 27.2, so three Afrobeats artists sit inside the top nine. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Nigeria's president since 2023, is tenth. Thabo Mbeki, president of South Africa from 1999 to 2008, is eleventh, and Nana Akufo-Addo, who led Ghana from January 2017 to January 2025, thirteenth, so Ghana and South Africa each place two heads of state in the fifteen, and Nigeria one.
Of 72 living people measured in the scope, the rest of the group are the global names the region follows: Cristiano Ronaldo fifth, Lionel Messi sixth, Beyoncé eighth, Barack Obama twelfth, Donald Trump fourteenth and Rihanna fifteenth. Evidence coverage is rated medium. The sharpest finding is at the top all the same: the continent's living fame now runs through Lagos more than through any capital.
