Among the living, Seoul outnumbers Beijing and Tokyo in East Asia's table

iFAMOUS Editorial Desk · 1 min read

Xi Jinping stays first, but nine of the fifteen leaders of the August 2026 living reading are South Korean, and three of them are members of BTS.

Xi Jinping remains the most famous living person in East Asia for August 2026, at 44, and Jennie remains second at 40.3. What the Alive reading changes is everything beneath them. With Shinzo Abe, Hirohito, Jiang Zemin, Bruce Lee, Oda Nobunaga and Genghis Khan removed, six places open up, and South Korea fills most of them.

IU, singer and actress, moves up to third at 33. Naruhito, Japan's emperor, is fourth, Shohei Ohtani fifth and Son Heung-min sixth, so Japan and Korea alternate through the top six behind China's leader. Hu Jintao, Xi's predecessor as general secretary, is the only other Chinese name in the fifteen, at seventh. Jung Kook is eighth, and Park Geun-hye, president from 2013 to 2017, ninth.

From tenth down the list is almost entirely new relative to the standard table. Lee Jae Myung, South Korea's president since 2025 and before that governor of Gyeonggi and mayor of Seongnam, is tenth at 30. Hayao Miyazaki, co-founder of Studio Ghibli, is eleventh, the only filmmaker in the group. Jimin and Jin, both of BTS, are twelfth and thirteenth on identical scores of 29.9, which puts three members of the band inside the top thirteen. Moon Jae-in, the twelfth president of the Republic of Korea, is fourteenth, and Donald Trump, whose attention reaches into every region, fifteenth.

Counted up, nine of the fifteen are South Korean, three Japanese, two Chinese and one American. Of the 71 living people measured in the scope, the ones the world still watches are mostly performers from Seoul and the politicians who have governed it since 2013. Coverage for the scope is rated medium. Even so, the reading is clear: China leads by a single name, and Korea leads by depth.

    About this list

This list ranks the most famous people of East Asia as of August 2026, by overall global fame rather than one month's attention: the top 71 of 71 names the rankings measured across the region, frozen as the permanent record of that edition. This is the Alive reading: living people only. The standard reading ranks everyone, living or dead, on one scale, and is one click away.

Xi Jinping is No. 1 on this list for August 2026. Behind Xi Jinping come Jennie and IU. Evidence coverage for this list is medium; positions near the bottom of the table may shift as coverage improves.

    What famous means here

Fame, in iFAMOUS, is how widely the world knows a name: how recognisable a person's name, face or work is, and how well people know who they are. It is assessed from extensive historical and current public data, some of it reaching back more than twenty years, and it is not merit, talent, importance or popularity on iFANN. The rankings model real-world global fame, not internet fame; the data is the instrument, not the subject. Activity on iFANN itself is excluded.

The month in the title is the date of this edition, not the period measured. The list is a snapshot of overall fame as it stood when the issue was frozen: a name does not lose its place because one month was quiet, and a trending moment alone does not put a name here. Trending attention is published separately on ifann.net.

    How the list was ranked

The iFANN Global Fame Rankings combine worldwide Wikipedia readership across languages, worldwide news coverage and search interest anchored against stable reference names, with search history reaching back to 2004. A twelve-month baseline sits behind the current reading and short-lived surges are capped, so the list reflects durable recognition rather than one week of headlines. Rankings are computed daily on ifann.net and frozen on the second day of the following month as that month's issue; a published issue never changes.

    About East Asia

East Asia is one of the countries and regions the journal ranks every month. Country lists use the same rankings and the same scale as The 100, so a name can be compared with its neighbours and against the world.

    Powered by iFANN

iFAMOUS is published by iFANN and powered by the iFANN Global Fame Rankings v5.62. Today's live standing for this list is on ifann.net; the journal freezes it once a month so it can be cited permanently.
