Salma Hayek holds off Frida Kahlo at the top of a deep Mexico list
iFAMOUS Editorial Desk · 1 min read
A living actress and a dead painter are separated by four tenths of a point on the August 2026 list of Mexicans the world watches, with Sheinbaum, Canelo and del Toro close behind.
Salma Hayek, who went from telenovelas to Hollywood, is the most famous Mexican in the world for August 2026, with a fame score of 19.0. Frida Kahlo, who died in 1954, is second at 18.6. The standard reading puts the living and the dead on one scale, and here it produces a near tie between a working actress and a painter whose self-portraits have outlasted her by seven decades.
The next tier is cinema and politics. Lupita Nyong'o, Kenyan-Mexican and born in Mexico City, and Guillermo del Toro, the filmmaker, share 16.1 in third and fourth. Thalía, thirty years into a Latin pop career, is fifth at 16.0. Claudia Sheinbaum, who became the 66th President of Mexico in 2024 and the first woman to hold the office, is sixth at 15.5. Canelo Álvarez, the boxer, is seventh.
Then the dead return. Leon Trotsky, the Russian revolutionary who was killed in Mexico City in 1940, is eighth at 14.4, a case of the origin tag following where attention groups a person. Anthony Quinn, the Mexican-born actor who won two Academy Awards, is fourteenth, and Benito Juárez, president from 1858 to 1872, fifteenth. Between them sit a goalkeeper and a forward from the national team, Guillermo Ochoa and Javier Hernández, plus Carlos Santana, Eiza González and the racing driver Sergio Pérez.
Mexico is one of the deeper origin lists: 260 people measured, and 75 of the top hundred living. Four of the top fifteen have died, and two of those four score above fourteen. Mexico's fame has a long memory.
About this list
This list ranks people from Mexico by their overall worldwide fame rather than local attention, as assessed for August 2026: the top 100 of 260 names, frozen as the permanent record of that edition. This is the standard reading: everyone, living or dead, on one scale. 75 of the 100 listed are living; the Alive reading restricts the same ranking to living people.
Salma Hayek is No. 1 on this list for August 2026. Behind Salma Hayek come Frida Kahlo and Lupita Nyong'o.
What famous means here
Fame, in iFAMOUS, is how widely the world knows a name: how recognisable a person's name, face or work is, and how well people know who they are. It is assessed from extensive historical and current public data, some of it reaching back more than twenty years, and it is not merit, talent, importance or popularity on iFANN. The rankings model real-world global fame, not internet fame; the data is the instrument, not the subject. Activity on iFANN itself is excluded.
The month in the title is the date of this edition, not the period measured. The list is a snapshot of overall fame as it stood when the issue was frozen: a name does not lose its place because one month was quiet, and a trending moment alone does not put a name here. Trending attention is published separately on ifann.net.
How the list was ranked
The iFANN Global Fame Rankings combine worldwide Wikipedia readership across languages, worldwide news coverage and search interest anchored against stable reference names, with search history reaching back to 2004. A twelve-month baseline sits behind the current reading and short-lived surges are capped, so the list reflects durable recognition rather than one week of headlines. Rankings are computed daily on ifann.net and frozen on the second day of the following month as that month's issue; a published issue never changes.
About Mexico
Mexico is one of the countries and regions the journal ranks every month. Country lists use the same rankings and the same scale as The 100, so a name can be compared with its neighbours and against the world.
