Japan's origin list for August 2026 puts a Dodgers pitcher first, the country's first female prime minister second, and mixes animators, novelists and emperors below them.
Shohei Ohtani, the Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher and designated hitter, is the most famous person from Japan in August 2026 with a score of 19.4. Sanae Takaichi, who became Japan's first female prime minister in October 2025, is second at 18. Hayao Miyazaki, co-founder of Studio Ghibli, is third at 15.8, and Hideo Kojima, the video game designer, fourth at 15.6. A baseball player, a prime minister, an animator and a game designer: no other origin list in this issue opens with four such different fields.
The engine measures 115 people from Japan and shows the top hundred, of whom 65 are living. The dead are prominent. Shinzo Abe, the longest-serving prime minister in Japan's history, is fifth at 15.1. Akira Kurosawa, the film director, is eighth. Hirohito, emperor from 1926 to 1989, is ninth, and Miyamoto Musashi, the seventeenth-century swordsman, eleventh at 13.1. Akira Toriyama, creator of Dragon Ball, is fourteenth. Five of the top fifteen are gone, and they span four centuries.
The living middle is culture rather than sport. Naruhito, the 126th emperor, is sixth. Haruki Murakami, the novelist born in 1949, is seventh. Yoko Ono, the artist and musician born in Tokyo in 1933, is tenth. Eiichiro Oda, whose One Piece is the best-selling manga in history, is twelfth, and Kazuo Ishiguro, the British novelist born in Nagasaki, fifteenth by origin.
Naomi Osaka, thirteenth, is the only athlete besides Ohtani. The ranking measures worldwide fame, not merit, and Japan's attention is unusually spread: a ballpark, a parliament, a drawing table and a throne.
About this list
This list ranks people from Japan by their overall worldwide fame rather than local attention, as assessed for August 2026: the top 100 of 115 names, frozen as the permanent record of that edition. This is the standard reading: everyone, living or dead, on one scale. 65 of the 100 listed are living; the Alive reading restricts the same ranking to living people.
Shohei Ohtani is No. 1 on this list for August 2026. Behind Shohei Ohtani come Sanae Takaichi and Hayao Miyazaki.
What famous means here
Fame, in iFAMOUS, is how widely the world knows a name: how recognisable a person's name, face or work is, and how well people know who they are. It is assessed from extensive historical and current public data, some of it reaching back more than twenty years, and it is not merit, talent, importance or popularity on iFANN. The rankings model real-world global fame, not internet fame; the data is the instrument, not the subject. Activity on iFANN itself is excluded.
The month in the title is the date of this edition, not the period measured. The list is a snapshot of overall fame as it stood when the issue was frozen: a name does not lose its place because one month was quiet, and a trending moment alone does not put a name here. Trending attention is published separately on ifann.net.
How the list was ranked
The iFANN Global Fame Rankings combine worldwide Wikipedia readership across languages, worldwide news coverage and search interest anchored against stable reference names, with search history reaching back to 2004. A twelve-month baseline sits behind the current reading and short-lived surges are capped, so the list reflects durable recognition rather than one week of headlines. Rankings are computed daily on ifann.net and frozen on the second day of the following month as that month's issue; a published issue never changes.
About Japan
Japan is one of the countries and regions the journal ranks every month. Country lists use the same rankings and the same scale as The 100, so a name can be compared with its neighbours and against the world.
