Living Japan: Ohtani, Takaichi and a creative bench that runs from Miyazaki to Kusama
iFAMOUS Editorial Desk · 1 min read
With Abe, Kurosawa, Hirohito, Musashi and Toriyama absent, the Alive reading of Japan's origin list brings in Kishida, Miyamoto, Miura, Kusama and Honda.
Japan's Alive reading for August 2026 measures 73 living people and drops five names from the standard top fifteen: Shinzo Abe, Akira Kurosawa, Hirohito, Miyamoto Musashi and Akira Toriyama. Shohei Ohtani stays first at 19.4 and Sanae Takaichi, prime minister since October 2025, second at 18. Hayao Miyazaki and Hideo Kojima hold third and fourth, and Naruhito, the emperor, rises to fifth.
The five replacements say something about where Japan's living attention lies. Fumio Kishida, prime minister from October 2021 to August 2024, enters at eleventh with 11.5. Shigeru Miyamoto, the game designer born in 1952, is twelfth, giving the list two of the medium's most recognised creators alongside Kojima. Kazuyoshi Miura, the footballer still playing at Fukushima United in his late fifties, is thirteenth. Yayoi Kusama, whose polka dots and Infinity Mirror Rooms have made her one of the most recognisable artists alive, is fourteenth at 11.2. Keisuke Honda, footballer and venture capitalist, is fifteenth.
The core of the table is creative work. Haruki Murakami is sixth, Yoko Ono seventh, Eiichiro Oda, creator of One Piece, eighth, and Kazuo Ishiguro, the British novelist born in Nagasaki, tenth. With Miyazaki, Kojima, Miyamoto and Kusama, that is eight of fifteen living names from animation, games, fiction and art.
Sport contributes four: Ohtani, Naomi Osaka at ninth, Miura and Honda. Politics has two, Takaichi and Kishida, and the throne one. The ranking measures worldwide fame, not merit, and living Japan is watched more for what it draws, writes and designs than for anyone who governs it.
About this list
This list ranks people from Japan by their overall worldwide fame rather than local attention, as assessed for August 2026: the top 73 of 73 names, frozen as the permanent record of that edition. This is the Alive reading: living people only. The standard reading ranks everyone, living or dead, on one scale, and is one click away.
Shohei Ohtani is No. 1 on this list for August 2026. Behind Shohei Ohtani come Sanae Takaichi and Hayao Miyazaki.
What famous means here
Fame, in iFAMOUS, is how widely the world knows a name: how recognisable a person's name, face or work is, and how well people know who they are. It is assessed from extensive historical and current public data, some of it reaching back more than twenty years, and it is not merit, talent, importance or popularity on iFANN. The rankings model real-world global fame, not internet fame; the data is the instrument, not the subject. Activity on iFANN itself is excluded.
The month in the title is the date of this edition, not the period measured. The list is a snapshot of overall fame as it stood when the issue was frozen: a name does not lose its place because one month was quiet, and a trending moment alone does not put a name here. Trending attention is published separately on ifann.net.
How the list was ranked
The iFANN Global Fame Rankings combine worldwide Wikipedia readership across languages, worldwide news coverage and search interest anchored against stable reference names, with search history reaching back to 2004. A twelve-month baseline sits behind the current reading and short-lived surges are capped, so the list reflects durable recognition rather than one week of headlines. Rankings are computed daily on ifann.net and frozen on the second day of the following month as that month's issue; a published issue never changes.
About Japan
Japan is one of the countries and regions the journal ranks every month. Country lists use the same rankings and the same scale as The 100, so a name can be compared with its neighbours and against the world.

iFAMOUS is published by iFANN and powered by the iFANN Global Fame Rankings v5.62. Today's live standing for this list is on ifann.net; the journal freezes it once a month so it can be cited permanently.
