Pakistan's living list: Malala, Imran Khan, and a middle filled by the diaspora

With Bhutto, Jinnah, Musharraf and four others removed, the August 2026 Alive reading for Pakistan drops from politics into comedy, cinema and surgery.
Malala Yousafzai leads Pakistan's living reading at 15.6, as she leads the standard one. Imran Khan is second at 12.7, Shehbaz Sharif third and Asif Ali Zardari fourth. The difference is what happens after Nawaz Sharif at fifth and Asim Munir at sixth: the deep bench of dead statesmen is gone, and the list opens onto people the standard reading never reached.
Seven names are absent: Benazir Bhutto, fourth on the one-scale list, Mohammad Ali Jinnah, Pervez Musharraf, Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, the physicist Abdus Salam, Zia-ul-Haq and Ayub Khan. That is nearly half the standard top fifteen, and every one of them a ruler or a laureate.
Their replacements are mostly diaspora and mostly not political. Kumail Nanjiani, the Pakistani-American comedian, is eighth. Iman Vellani, the Canadian actress of Pakistani descent known from superhero cinema, is ninth at 7.1. Jemima Goldsmith, the British producer and journalist once married to Imran Khan, is eleventh. Hasnat Khan, the British-Pakistani heart surgeon, is twelfth. Durefishan Saleem, an Urdu television actress from Lahore, is fourteenth. Dulquer Salmaan, an Indian actor, appears at tenth; origin tags follow where attention groups people, and his is an adjacent case. Three militants, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, Ramzi Yousef and Masood Azhar, hold seventh, thirteenth and fifteenth, since the ranking measures fame rather than standing.
Twenty-two of the 35 Pakistanis measured are living. The Alive reading for August 2026 is a shorter and stranger list than the standard one, with a Nobel laureate, three politicians and a general on top and a scatter of actors, comedians and doctors underneath.
