A president, a former president and thirteen cricketers: Sri Lanka's fame is narrow

Anura Kumara Dissanayake leads the August 2026 list of people from Sri Lanka, and nearly everyone below the top two plays or played cricket.
Anura Kumara Dissanayake, President of Sri Lanka since September 2024, is the most famous Sri Lankan in the world for August 2026, with a fame score of 9.2. Chandrika Kumaratunga, the fifth president, who served from 1994 to 2005 and remains the longest-serving in the country's history, is second at 5.2. After that the scores fall below four and stay there.
Thirteen of the fifteen names are cricketers. Dhananjaya de Silva, who captains the Test side, and the fast bowler Asitha Fernando tie for third at 3.9. Dinesh Chandimal, a mainstay of the national team for over a decade, is fifth. Kusal Mendis, the limited-overs captain, is sixth. The two retired greats of an earlier era, Chaminda Vaas at seventh and Arjuna Ranatunga at eleventh, are separated by three current players; Ranatunga, who lifted the 1996 World Cup as captain, is now a politician and is tagged as one.
The rest of the table is the modern squad and its recent past: Dasun Shanaka, Ajantha Mendis with his mystery spin, Angelo Mathews, Rangana Herath, Thisara Perera, Nuwan Kulasekara and, at fifteenth, Charith Asalanka, the One Day International captain, at 1.5.
Thirty people were measured, all of them living, and no dead name scores high enough to appear. The list records worldwide fame, and for Sri Lanka that attention is a president and a cricket team, with nothing from film, music or literature reaching the top fifteen.
