Chopra and Modi share first in a living India of film and cricket
iFAMOUS Editorial Desk · 1 min read
With Gandhi, Mother Teresa and Indira Gandhi absent, the Alive reading of India's origin list promotes Sundar Pichai, Mukesh Ambani and Kareena Kapoor.
India's Alive reading for August 2026 measures 404 living people and begins with a tie. Priyanka Chopra and Narendra Modi share first place at 20.1, followed by Shah Rukh Khan at 19.9 and Salman Khan at 18.5. Mahatma Gandhi, four points clear of everyone in the standard reading, is gone, as are Mother Teresa and Indira Gandhi, and the table becomes a study of present-day India rather than its founding.
The promotions come at the bottom. Sundar Pichai, chief executive of Google and Alphabet, enters at thirteenth with 14.8, level with Rohit Sharma. Mukesh Ambani, chairman of Reliance Industries, is fourteenth at 13.8, and Kareena Kapoor fifteenth at the same score. Two of the three new names are business, a field that did not reach the standard top fifteen at all.
Cinema still dominates by count. C. Joseph Vijay, the Tamil star turned politician, is sixth. Aishwarya Rai, Alia Bhatt and Amitabh Bachchan are eighth, ninth and tenth; with the two Khans, Chopra and Kapoor, that is eight actors among fifteen names, spanning from Bachchan's 1970s debut to Bhatt's current run.
Cricket holds three places: Virat Kohli seventh at 17.4, Sachin Tendulkar eleventh, Rohit Sharma twelfth. Thomas Müller, the German forward, sits fifth through his origin tag, an adjacent placement the engine records without comment.
Modi is the only politician in the group. The ranking measures worldwide fame, not merit, and living India's attention is Bollywood first, the crease second, and the boardroom rising.
About this list
This list ranks people from India by their overall worldwide fame rather than local attention, as assessed for August 2026: the top 100 of 404 names, frozen as the permanent record of that edition. This is the Alive reading: living people only. The standard reading ranks everyone, living or dead, on one scale, and is one click away.
Priyanka Chopra is No. 1 on this list for August 2026. Behind Priyanka Chopra come Narendra Modi and Shah Rukh Khan.
What famous means here
Fame, in iFAMOUS, is how widely the world knows a name: how recognisable a person's name, face or work is, and how well people know who they are. It is assessed from extensive historical and current public data, some of it reaching back more than twenty years, and it is not merit, talent, importance or popularity on iFANN. The rankings model real-world global fame, not internet fame; the data is the instrument, not the subject. Activity on iFANN itself is excluded.
The month in the title is the date of this edition, not the period measured. The list is a snapshot of overall fame as it stood when the issue was frozen: a name does not lose its place because one month was quiet, and a trending moment alone does not put a name here. Trending attention is published separately on ifann.net.
How the list was ranked
The iFANN Global Fame Rankings combine worldwide Wikipedia readership across languages, worldwide news coverage and search interest anchored against stable reference names, with search history reaching back to 2004. A twelve-month baseline sits behind the current reading and short-lived surges are capped, so the list reflects durable recognition rather than one week of headlines. Rankings are computed daily on ifann.net and frozen on the second day of the following month as that month's issue; a published issue never changes.
About India
India is one of the countries and regions the journal ranks every month. Country lists use the same rankings and the same scale as The 100, so a name can be compared with its neighbours and against the world.
