With Rabin, Ben-Gurion, Meir, Peres, Sharon, Begin and Kahneman removed, the Alive reading of Israel's origin list promotes a violinist, a singer and a novelist.
The Alive reading of Israel's origin list for August 2026 covers 199 living people and removes seven of the standard top fifteen: Ariel Sharon, Yitzhak Rabin, David Ben-Gurion, Golda Meir, Shimon Peres and Menachem Begin, all former prime ministers, and Daniel Kahneman, the psychologist. No other list in this batch loses as much of its upper table to the dead.
The top four are unchanged. Benjamin Netanyahu leads at 23.8, Natalie Portman is second at 20.4, Gal Gadot third at 14.9, and Yuval Noah Harari fourth at 13.2. Below them, the living politicians close up. Naftali Bennett, prime minister from 2021 to 2022, is fifth. Yair Lapid is sixth, Israel Katz seventh, Ehud Barak eighth and Ehud Olmert, who held the office from 2006 to 2009, ninth. Yoav Gallant, defence minister from 2022 to 2024, is eleventh, Benny Gantz twelfth and Yair Golan, who leads the Democrats party formed in 2024, fifteenth.
The new arrivals are the reason to read this version. Itzhak Perlman, the violinist and conductor born in 1945, enters at tenth with 8.6. Netta Barzilai, the singer, is thirteenth. David Grossman, the novelist and essayist, is fourteenth at 7.3. None of the three appeared in the standard top fifteen, where the founding generation crowded them out.
Still, nine of fifteen are politicians or generals. The ranking measures worldwide fame, not merit, and even among the living, Israel's attention is dominated by the people who have governed it, with a small cultural bench underneath.
