Denmark's 18 living names: two Schmeichels, two Marseille midfielders and no royals
iFAMOUS Editorial Desk · 1 min read
The Alive reading of the Denmark origin list for August 2026 loses Andersen and Bohr and adds Højbjerg and Nørgaard to a table that is mostly football and film.
Denmark's living list for August 2026 has 18 names, and once Hans Christian Andersen and Niels Bohr are set aside the top fifteen is filled from a very short bench. Pierre-Emile Højbjerg, who captains both Marseille and Denmark, enters at fourteenth with 7.6, and Christian Nørgaard, the defensive midfielder, at fifteenth with 7.2. Everyone else moves up a place or two.
Mads Mikkelsen leads at 14.7, Christian Eriksen is second at 13.2 and Giancarlo Esposito, the Copenhagen-born American actor, third at 12.3. Lars Ulrich of Metallica is fourth. Jonas Vingegaard, the cyclist, and Peter Schmeichel, the goalkeeper of Manchester United's 1999 treble side, share 11.9 at fifth and sixth.
The absence of the two dead men matters more than their rank suggests. Andersen and Bohr were the only writer and the only scientist in the standard top fifteen; without them the living list contains no author, no scientist, no musician beyond Ulrich, and no politician or royal at all. Denmark's monarchy, its designers and its architects do not register in this month's scope.
What does register is a football family and a film industry. Peter and Kasper Schmeichel, father and son, both goalkeepers, hold sixth and eighth. Michael Laudrup, born in Frederiksberg in 1964, at tenth, Rasmus Højlund of Napoli at eleventh and Andreas Christensen at twelfth complete the football contingent with Eriksen, Højbjerg and Nørgaard. Nikolaj Coster-Waldau at seventh, Connie Nielsen at ninth and the director Nicolas Winding Refn at thirteenth hold the screen. Eighteen living Danes, and the world watches them on the pitch and in the cinema.

About this list
This list ranks people from Denmark by their overall worldwide fame rather than local attention, as assessed for August 2026: the top 18 of 18 names, frozen as the permanent record of that edition. This is the Alive reading: living people only. The standard reading ranks everyone, living or dead, on one scale, and is one click away.
Mads Mikkelsen is No. 1 on this list for August 2026. Behind Mads Mikkelsen come Christian Eriksen and Giancarlo Esposito.
What famous means here
Fame, in iFAMOUS, is how widely the world knows a name: how recognisable a person's name, face or work is, and how well people know who they are. It is assessed from extensive historical and current public data, some of it reaching back more than twenty years, and it is not merit, talent, importance or popularity on iFANN. The rankings model real-world global fame, not internet fame; the data is the instrument, not the subject. Activity on iFANN itself is excluded.
The month in the title is the date of this edition, not the period measured. The list is a snapshot of overall fame as it stood when the issue was frozen: a name does not lose its place because one month was quiet, and a trending moment alone does not put a name here. Trending attention is published separately on ifann.net.
How the list was ranked
The iFANN Global Fame Rankings combine worldwide Wikipedia readership across languages, worldwide news coverage and search interest anchored against stable reference names, with search history reaching back to 2004. A twelve-month baseline sits behind the current reading and short-lived surges are capped, so the list reflects durable recognition rather than one week of headlines. Rankings are computed daily on ifann.net and frozen on the second day of the following month as that month's issue; a published issue never changes.
About Denmark
Denmark is one of the countries and regions the journal ranks every month. Country lists use the same rankings and the same scale as The 100, so a name can be compared with its neighbours and against the world.
