Shakira leads Colombia by 15 points, with Pablo Escobar second and García Márquez eighth
iFAMOUS Editorial Desk · 1 min read
The Colombia origin list for August 2026 is a pop star far ahead of a dead drug lord, a Nobel novelist and a generation of reggaeton and football exports.
Shakira's fame score of 33.8 for August 2026 puts her more than 15 points clear of anyone else from Colombia. The next name is Pablo Escobar, the founder of the Medellín Cartel who was killed in 1993, at 18.6. That pairing, a singer and a criminal, is what the world's attention to Colombia has looked like for three decades, and the ranking measures fame rather than anything the country would choose.
Below them the list is far more like the country's own image of itself. Sofía Vergara and John Leguizamo, both Colombian-American actors, are third and fourth at 16.7 and 16.6. Maluma and J Balvin, the two Medellín reggaeton stars, are fifth and sixth. Luis Díaz of Bayern Munich is seventh at 15.8, and Gabriel García Márquez, the novelist known to millions as Gabo, is eighth at 15.4, one of three dead names in the top fifteen.
Football holds five seats: Díaz, Radamel Falcao, the national team's all-time top scorer, James Rodríguez, who captains it, Julián Quiñones, born in Colombia but a Mexico international at Al-Qadsiah, and Jhon Durán of Zenit. The third dead name is also a footballer: Andrés Escobar, the defender killed in 1994, at fourteenth.
Politics enters once, with Abelardo de la Espriella, the lawyer elected president in 2026, eleventh at 13.2, and Karol G, the singer, is thirteenth at 11.4. Fifty-five names were measured and 45 are living. The living names are almost all musicians, actors and players who work in the United States, Spain, Germany and Mexico. Colombia's fame, like its music, travels.
About this list
This list ranks people from Colombia by their overall worldwide fame rather than local attention, as assessed for August 2026: the top 55 of 55 names, frozen as the permanent record of that edition. This is the standard reading: everyone, living or dead, on one scale. 45 of the 55 listed are living; the Alive reading restricts the same ranking to living people.
Shakira is No. 1 on this list for August 2026. Behind Shakira come Pablo Escobar and Sofía Vergara.
What famous means here
Fame, in iFAMOUS, is how widely the world knows a name: how recognisable a person's name, face or work is, and how well people know who they are. It is assessed from extensive historical and current public data, some of it reaching back more than twenty years, and it is not merit, talent, importance or popularity on iFANN. The rankings model real-world global fame, not internet fame; the data is the instrument, not the subject. Activity on iFANN itself is excluded.
The month in the title is the date of this edition, not the period measured. The list is a snapshot of overall fame as it stood when the issue was frozen: a name does not lose its place because one month was quiet, and a trending moment alone does not put a name here. Trending attention is published separately on ifann.net.
How the list was ranked
The iFANN Global Fame Rankings combine worldwide Wikipedia readership across languages, worldwide news coverage and search interest anchored against stable reference names, with search history reaching back to 2004. A twelve-month baseline sits behind the current reading and short-lived surges are capped, so the list reflects durable recognition rather than one week of headlines. Rankings are computed daily on ifann.net and frozen on the second day of the following month as that month's issue; a published issue never changes.
About Colombia
Colombia is one of the countries and regions the journal ranks every month. Country lists use the same rankings and the same scale as The 100, so a name can be compared with its neighbours and against the world.
