Congo's living list is a football and basketball diaspora with a president on top

The Alive reading of the Democratic Republic of the Congo origin list for August 2026 loses Mutombo, Laurent Kabila and Tshombe, and fills in with players from France and the NBA.
Three names leave the Democratic Republic of the Congo origin list when it is read for the living, and each represents a different century of the country's story. Moïse Tshombe, the Katangan secessionist who died in 1969, Laurent-Désiré Kabila, the president killed in 2001, and Dikembe Mutombo, the NBA defensive centre who died in 2024, are all absent from the Alive table for August 2026. Thirty-two of the 38 measured names remain.
Félix Tshisekedi, president since January 2019, leads the living at 11. Gims, the rapper and singer, is second at 10.3, and Claude Makelélé, the former French international born in Kinshasa, is third at 9.5. Loïs Openda, the Belgian striker at Lyon, is fourth, and Joseph Kabila, who governed from 2001 to 2019, is fifth at 8.1.
The names that enter the top fifteen are all athletes of the diaspora. Tanguy Ndombele, the French midfielder born in 1996, is thirteenth at 5.9, tied with Noah Sadiki, the Congolese footballer. Bismack Biyombo, the basketball player, is fifteenth at 5.8. With Jonathan Kuminga of the Atlanta Hawks at sixth, that gives basketball two seats and football eight.
Denis Mukwege, the gynaecologist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, is eleventh at 6.2, the only scientist or humanitarian in the table. Cédric Bakambu, Axel Tuanzebe, Steve Mandanda, Yannick Bolasie and Chancel Mbemba fill the middle. The living Congo list is one of young people, most of them raised abroad and playing in Europe or the United States, with two presidents and one doctor as the exceptions.
