The Democratic Republic of the Congo origin table for August 2026 is a mix of presidents, footballers raised in France and Belgium, and basketball players in the United States.
Félix Tshisekedi, president of the Democratic Republic of the Congo since January 2019, is the most famous person from the country in the world for August 2026, scoring 11. He is followed by Gims, the singer and rapper born in 1986 who became one of the biggest acts in French-language music, at 10.3, and Claude Makelélé, born in Kinshasa in 1973 and known for the defensive midfield role that carries his name, at 9.5. Politics, music and football, in that order, and two of the three careers built in France.
That is the pattern for the whole list of 38 measured names. Congolese fame abroad is largely a diaspora story. Loïs Openda, fourth at 9.2, is a Belgian striker on loan at Lyon from Juventus. Steve Mandanda, eleventh, and Tanguy Ndombele are French internationals. Yannick Bolasie and Axel Tuanzebe came up through English football. Jonathan Kuminga, sixth at 7.9, was born in Goma in 2002 and plays for the Atlanta Hawks, and Dikembe Mutombo, the Congolese-American centre who died in 2024, is ninth at 7.1.
The dead are few but significant. Laurent-Désiré Kabila, the president assassinated in 2001, is eighth at 7.3, and Moïse Tshombe, the secessionist leader of the 1960s, is thirteenth. Joseph Kabila, who succeeded his father and governed until 2019, is fifth at 8.1.
Thirty-two of the 38 names are living. Denis Mukwege, the gynaecologist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, is fourteenth at 6.2, and Chancel Mbemba, who captains the national team, is fifteenth. The list is short and its scores are modest, but its reach is wide: Kinshasa, Paris, Brussels, Manchester and Atlanta all appear in the top fifteen.
