Hasina, Yunus and Tarique Rahman lead a Bangladesh list half filled by the dead

iFAMOUS Editorial Desk · 1 min read

The Bangladesh origin table for August 2026 is a roll of prime ministers, presidents and founders, with cricket and one poet on the edges.

Sheikh Hasina, prime minister of Bangladesh from 1996 to 2001 and again from 2009 to 2024, is the most famous person from the country in the world for August 2026, with a score of 14.3. Muhammad Yunus, the economist who founded Grameen Bank and pioneered microcredit, is second at 13.2, and Tarique Rahman, who became the country's eleventh prime minister in 2026, is third at 12.2. Politics fills the top of the list, and the family lines inside it run deep: Hasina is the daughter of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, fourth at 10.9, and Tarique Rahman is the son of Ziaur Rahman, fifth, and Khaleda Zia, seventh.

That makes the dead unusually important here. Of the 47 names measured, only 24 are living, an unusually low share for an origin list. Mujibur Rahman, the country's first president, Ziaur Rahman, the army chief who became president and was killed in 1981, and Khaleda Zia, the first woman to be prime minister, all hold places in the top seven. Kazi Nazrul Islam, the national poet, is eighth at 8.1, and the former president Zillur Rahman is twelfth.

Beyond government the world attaches two other things to Bangladesh. One is dissent, in the writer Taslima Nasrin at ninth. The other is cricket: Shakib Al Hasan, the all-rounder who also went into politics, is tied with her at 6.9, and Mustafizur Rahman and Mushfiqur Rahim follow at thirteenth and fourteenth.

There is one diaspora name. Hamza Choudhury, the English-born footballer of Bangladeshi descent, is eleventh at 5.5. The current president Mohammad Shahabuddin, who served from 2023 to 2026, is sixth. The ranking measures worldwide fame, and for Bangladesh that attention is overwhelmingly political and largely historical.

    About this list

This list ranks people from Bangladesh by their overall worldwide fame rather than local attention, as assessed for August 2026: the top 47 of 47 names, frozen as the permanent record of that edition. This is the standard reading: everyone, living or dead, on one scale. 24 of the 47 listed are living; the Alive reading restricts the same ranking to living people.

Sheikh Hasina is No. 1 on this list for August 2026. Behind Sheikh Hasina come Muhammad Yunus and Tarique Rahman.

    What famous means here

Fame, in iFAMOUS, is how widely the world knows a name: how recognisable a person's name, face or work is, and how well people know who they are. It is assessed from extensive historical and current public data, some of it reaching back more than twenty years, and it is not merit, talent, importance or popularity on iFANN. The rankings model real-world global fame, not internet fame; the data is the instrument, not the subject. Activity on iFANN itself is excluded.

The month in the title is the date of this edition, not the period measured. The list is a snapshot of overall fame as it stood when the issue was frozen: a name does not lose its place because one month was quiet, and a trending moment alone does not put a name here. Trending attention is published separately on ifann.net.

    How the list was ranked

The iFANN Global Fame Rankings combine worldwide Wikipedia readership across languages, worldwide news coverage and search interest anchored against stable reference names, with search history reaching back to 2004. A twelve-month baseline sits behind the current reading and short-lived surges are capped, so the list reflects durable recognition rather than one week of headlines. Rankings are computed daily on ifann.net and frozen on the second day of the following month as that month's issue; a published issue never changes.

    About Bangladesh

Bangladesh is one of the countries and regions the journal ranks every month. Country lists use the same rankings and the same scale as The 100, so a name can be compared with its neighbours and against the world.

    Powered by iFANN

iFAMOUS is published by iFANN and powered by the iFANN Global Fame Rankings v5.62. Today's live standing for this list is on ifann.net; the journal freezes it once a month so it can be cited permanently.
