Ronaldo, Mourinho and then a cliff: Portugal's fame drops off after sixth place
iFAMOUS Editorial Desk · 1 min read
Six names score above 25 on the August 2026 Portugal list, and the seventh scores 7.8.
Cristiano Ronaldo is the most famous person connected to Portugal in August 2026, and his score of 74.4 is one of the highest on any country list this month. José Mourinho, the manager, is second at 45.6. The gap between them is almost thirty points, and the gap between Mourinho and the seventh name is larger still.
The top six is a mix of football and state. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the former president, is third at 30.7, and António Costa, who has led the European Council since 2024, fourth at 29.3. João Félix, the forward now at Al-Nassr, is fifth, and André Ventura, the professor who founded the far-right party Chega, sixth at 25.9. Then the table falls to João Palhinha, the Bayern Munich midfielder, at 7.8, and stays in single figures for the rest of the top fifteen.
That lower band is dominated by coaches. Jorge Jesus, now head coach of the national team, is eighth, Sérgio Conceição tenth and Ruben Amorim, known for his Sporting CP years and his short spell at Manchester United, thirteenth. Portugal exports football managers the way other countries export singers, and the list reflects it. Luís Montenegro, prime minister since April 2024, is ninth, and António José Seguro, the current president, fourteenth.
Every one of the 151 names measured is Portuguese, and 99 of the top hundred are living, so the standard and Alive readings are nearly identical. Dulce Pontes, the singer whose voice moves between classical, pop and folk, is the only musician in the top fifteen, at eleventh, and Carlos Lopes, the Olympic marathon champion, sits twelfth. Coverage is rated high.
About this list
This list ranks the most famous people connected to Portugal as of August 2026, by overall fame rather than one month's attention: the top 100 of 151 names the rankings measured for Portugal, frozen as the permanent record of that edition. This is the standard reading: everyone, living or dead, on one scale. 99 of the 100 listed are living; the Alive reading restricts the same ranking to living people.
Cristiano Ronaldo is No. 1 on this list for August 2026. Behind Cristiano Ronaldo come José Mourinho and Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. Evidence coverage for this list is high, so its order can be quoted with confidence.
What famous means here
Fame, in iFAMOUS, is how widely the world knows a name: how recognisable a person's name, face or work is, and how well people know who they are. It is assessed from extensive historical and current public data, some of it reaching back more than twenty years, and it is not merit, talent, importance or popularity on iFANN. The rankings model real-world global fame, not internet fame; the data is the instrument, not the subject. Activity on iFANN itself is excluded.
The month in the title is the date of this edition, not the period measured. The list is a snapshot of overall fame as it stood when the issue was frozen: a name does not lose its place because one month was quiet, and a trending moment alone does not put a name here. Trending attention is published separately on ifann.net.
How the list was ranked
The iFANN Global Fame Rankings combine worldwide Wikipedia readership across languages, worldwide news coverage and search interest anchored against stable reference names, with search history reaching back to 2004. A twelve-month baseline sits behind the current reading and short-lived surges are capped, so the list reflects durable recognition rather than one week of headlines. Rankings are computed daily on ifann.net and frozen on the second day of the following month as that month's issue; a published issue never changes.
About Portugal
Portugal is one of the countries and regions the journal ranks every month. Country lists use the same rankings and the same scale as The 100, so a name can be compared with its neighbours and against the world.
