Aishwarya Rai leads an India where cinema outranks Nehru, Ambedkar and Dhoni
iFAMOUS Editorial Desk · 1 min read
Nine actors fill India's August 2026 top fifteen, with B. R. Ambedkar the highest historical figure and MS Dhoni the only cricketer.
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan, the former Miss World who has led Hindi and Tamil cinema for more than two decades, is the most famous person connected to India in August 2026. Her score of 64.2 is more than ten points clear of the field, and the field behind her is overwhelmingly made of film. C. Joseph Vijay, the Tamil star who since 2026 dominates his state's politics as well, is fourth. Priyanka Chopra fifth, Kareena Kapoor sixth, Akshay Kumar ninth, Deepika Padukone tenth, Aamir Khan thirteenth, Kajal Aggarwal fifteenth, and Sridevi, who died in 2018, seventh. Nine of fifteen places belong to actors.
The historical names that interrupt them are heavy ones. B. R. Ambedkar, the philosopher and social reformer, is second on 53.8, the highest dead name and the highest Indian outside cinema. Muhammad, the founder of Islam, is third, the single non-Indian in the top hundred. Jawaharlal Nehru, prime minister from 1947 to 1964, is eighth, and A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, scientist and president, eleventh. That four of the top eleven are figures of the state and of ideas, and all four are dead, says something about how India's past and its present compete for attention on one scale.
Cricket is represented once, by MS Dhoni at twelfth on 44.7, which for the country the sport is most identified with is a lower showing than the sector lists would suggest. Music has Shreya Ghoshal, the playback singer, at fourteenth.
The engine measured 374 people, and 99 of the top hundred are Indian, one of the most self-contained national tables in this issue. Seventy-seven of the hundred are living. It measures worldwide fame, not merit, and on that measure India's attention is cinema first, its founders second, and everything else after.
About this list
This list ranks the most famous people connected to India as of August 2026, by overall fame rather than one month's attention: the top 100 of 374 names the rankings measured for India, frozen as the permanent record of that edition. This is the standard reading: everyone, living or dead, on one scale. 77 of the 100 listed are living; the Alive reading restricts the same ranking to living people.
Aishwarya Rai is No. 1 on this list for August 2026. Behind Aishwarya Rai come B. R. Ambedkar and Muhammad. Evidence coverage for this list is high, so its order can be quoted with confidence.
What famous means here
Fame, in iFAMOUS, is how widely the world knows a name: how recognisable a person's name, face or work is, and how well people know who they are. It is assessed from extensive historical and current public data, some of it reaching back more than twenty years, and it is not merit, talent, importance or popularity on iFANN. The rankings model real-world global fame, not internet fame; the data is the instrument, not the subject. Activity on iFANN itself is excluded.
The month in the title is the date of this edition, not the period measured. The list is a snapshot of overall fame as it stood when the issue was frozen: a name does not lose its place because one month was quiet, and a trending moment alone does not put a name here. Trending attention is published separately on ifann.net.
How the list was ranked
The iFANN Global Fame Rankings combine worldwide Wikipedia readership across languages, worldwide news coverage and search interest anchored against stable reference names, with search history reaching back to 2004. A twelve-month baseline sits behind the current reading and short-lived surges are capped, so the list reflects durable recognition rather than one week of headlines. Rankings are computed daily on ifann.net and frozen on the second day of the following month as that month's issue; a published issue never changes.
About India
India is one of the countries and regions the journal ranks every month. Country lists use the same rankings and the same scale as The 100, so a name can be compared with its neighbours and against the world.

iFAMOUS is published by iFANN and powered by the iFANN Global Fame Rankings v5.62. Today's live standing for this list is on ifann.net; the journal freezes it once a month so it can be cited permanently.
