Seventeen years after his death, the King of Pop holds the top score on the August 2026 origin list for the United States, half a point ahead of the sitting president.
The most famous person born in the United States is dead. Michael Jackson, who died in 2009, holds a score of 42.2 in August 2026, ahead of Donald Trump at 41.7 and Taylor Swift at 37.3. That a singer gone for seventeen years can edge a sitting president who is covered every hour of every day says something about how durable the attention around Jackson remains.
The list is the largest in the issue. One thousand Americans are measured, the page ranks the top hundred, and 82 of those hundred are living. Jackson is the only dead name inside the top fifteen, which is otherwise a roll-call of the living pop and screen economy: Kim Kardashian fourth at 34.8, Beyoncé fifth, Eminem sixth, Jennifer Lopez seventh, Ariana Grande eighth, Selena Gomez ninth, Lady Gaga eleventh, Britney Spears twelfth and Madonna fifteenth. Politics takes two places, Trump second and Barack Obama, the 44th president, tenth at 30.8. Business takes one, and it belongs to an immigrant: Elon Musk, born in South Africa, is thirteenth at 29.4, tied with Britney Spears and Angelina Jolie. The origin tag gathers him here on recorded origin data, and the rankings measure fame rather than passports.
The scale of American fame is worth stating plainly. Madonna, fifteenth on this list at 28.6, would lead almost every other country's origin table outright. The gap between first and fifteenth here is under fourteen points, which means the top of the American list is not one or two outsized names but a dense field of people the whole world watches at once.
