Museveni first, a runner second, Kony third on Uganda's list

Uganda's August 2026 origin list of 20 living names puts its long-serving president far ahead of a world-record distance runner and the leader of the Lord's Resistance Army.
Yoweri Museveni has been president of Uganda since 1986, and the length of that tenure shows in his August 2026 score of 12.2, nearly double the next name on the country's origin list. Joshua Cheptegei, the long-distance runner who set world records at 5,000 and 10,000 metres, is second at 6.8. Joseph Kony, founder of the Lord's Resistance Army, is third at 6, a place held through notoriety rather than office.
The list is made of 20 people, all living, which leaves the country's earlier history unrepresented. Idi Amin, the president of the 1970s, is not measured under the Ugandan tag this month, and the ranking has no dead name anywhere in it.
Running gives Uganda its most reliable worldwide attention. Jacob Kiplimo, fifth at 4.9, has followed Cheptegei across track, road and cross-country. Mahmood Mamdani, fourth at 5.7, is the anthropologist widely regarded as one of Africa's leading political thinkers. Sheila Atim, seventh, is a Ugandan-British actress with two Olivier Awards, and Pepe Julian Onziema, eighth, one of East Africa's most visible LGBTQ activists.
The Museveni family holds two places, the president and First Lady Janet Museveni at tenth, and his longest-standing opponent, Kizza Besigye, is eleventh. The Kabaka of Buganda, Muwenda Mutebi II, is ninth. Two names the origin tag gathers from abroad, the American actor Phill Lewis at sixth and Richard Gibson, the British actor born in Kampala who played Herr Flick in 'Allo 'Allo, at fifteenth, sit alongside Brandon Davies, an American basketball player who represented Uganda.
