Without Lenin and Dostoyevsky, Russia's living list is fighters and officials

Take away the dead and the August 2026 list of Russian-born names becomes a contest between the Kremlin, the octagon and the tennis court.
Forty of the 62 people measured for Russia are living, and once the historical names drop out the shape of the list changes sharply. Vladimir Putin still leads at 28.8, but the second and third places now belong to Khabib Nurmagomedov at 21 and Islam Makhachev at 19.2, both mixed martial artists from Dagestan, and Khamzat Chimaev at ninth makes it three fighters in the top ten. No other country in the August 2026 issue leans so heavily on combat sport for its living fame.
The absentees explain the gap. Lenin, Dostoyevsky, Gorbachev, Yeltsin, Tarkovsky and Peter the Great all sat inside the standard top fifteen and all are gone from this reading. Their departure lifts Garry Kasparov, the chess grandmaster, to tenth, Daniil Medvedev, the tennis player, to eleventh, and Alla Pugacheva, the Soviet-era singer, to twelfth.
The living politicians cluster together: Dmitry Medvedev seventh at 14.7 and Sergey Lavrov eighth at 13.7, one a former president and the other foreign minister since 2004. Between them and Putin sit people who left. Irina Shayk, fourth, works in fashion in the West; Pavel Durov, fifth, runs Telegram from abroad; Maria Sharapova, sixth, spent her career on the American tennis circuit.
Two names from the Soviet sporting and scientific past survive on the living list. Fedor Emelianenko, the heavyweight who defined an earlier generation of fighting, is thirteenth, and Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space, is fourteenth at 9.8. Anna Kournikova, tied with her at 9.8, completes the fifteen.
