Purja leads Nepal's living list ahead of Everest records and a new premier

With the Buddha set aside, the August 2026 Alive reading for Nepal is climbers, politicians and one actress.
Nirmal Purja is the most famous living person from Nepal in the world for August 2026, at 11.5. The mountaineer, writer and guide takes the top place because the only name above him on the standard list, the Buddha, is not eligible for the Alive reading. Balen Shah, the engineer and rapper who became Prime Minister in March 2026, is second at 10.0.
Three of the eleven living names are Everest people. Purja on top, Lhakpa Sherpa at ninth with eleven summits, the most by any woman, and Kami Rita at tenth with 32 ascents as of May 2026, the most by anyone. Between them they hold the records the world associates with Nepal, and they hold them while still climbing.

Manisha Koirala, third at 7.3, is the only actress of Nepalese birth on the list, and Amrita Acharia, eleventh, is the diaspora entry, a British actress with Nepalese and Ukrainian roots. Eleven living names out of twelve measured. Small as it is, the Alive reading captures a country whose worldwide attention is currently split between the summit and the cabinet.
