Van Gogh outranks every living Dutch footballer, and Cruyff is not far behind

A painter who died in 1890 leads the August 2026 Netherlands list, with Depay, van Dijk and a NATO chief filling the places behind him.
Vincent van Gogh is the most famous person from the Netherlands in the world for August 2026. The painter scores 23.0, more than four points clear of Memphis Depay, the national team's all-time top scorer, at 18.7. The standard reading puts everyone on one scale, and on that scale a Post-Impressionist dead for 136 years beats every Dutch footballer currently drawing a wage.
Football takes most of the rest. Virgil van Dijk is third at 17.4. Johan Cruyff, the second dead name, is fourth at 17.0. Dean Huijsen, born in Amsterdam in 2005 and now a Real Madrid centre-back who plays for Spain, is sixth. Cody Gakpo, Arne Slot, who won the Premier League with Liverpool in his first season, Marco van Basten, Frenkie de Jong, Robin van Persie, Arjen Robben, Ronald Koeman and Ruud van Nistelrooy fill seventh through fifteenth with one interruption. Twelve of fifteen names are footballers or football managers.
The two exceptions are worth the pause. Mark Rutte, Secretary General of NATO since October 2024, is fifth at 16.0, the highest-placed living Dutch person who has never kicked a ball for a living. Famke Janssen, the actress and former model known for Hollywood franchises, is fourteenth at 12.6.
Seventy-six people were measured and 72 are living. Of the four who have died, two hold top-four places, which is a striking ratio: the Netherlands has few dead names in this scope, but the ones it has are among the most recognised people it has ever produced.
