Michelle Yeoh leads Malaysia, and half the list built its fame somewhere else
iFAMOUS Editorial Desk · 1 min read
An Oscar-winning actress, a prime minister and a Hollywood horror director top the August 2026 Malaysia list, with the badminton court close behind.
Michelle Yeoh is the most famous Malaysian in the world for August 2026, with a fame score of 12.2. Anwar Ibrahim, Prime Minister since 2022, is second at 11.5, and James Wan, the Malaysian-born Australian director behind some of Hollywood's biggest horror franchises, is third at 10.3. Three fields, three different routes to attention, and only one of the three still living in the country.
That pattern runs down the table. Jimmy Choo, the fashion designer, is fourth. Ronny Chieng, born in Malaysia and now an American comedian and host, is ninth. Nigel Ng, the comedian behind the Uncle Roger character, is eleventh. Tsai Ming-liang, the Taiwan-based filmmaker, is thirteenth, and Claudia Wells, the American actress who played Jennifer Parker in Back to the Future, fourteenth. Michael Wong, known in Mandopop as Guang Liang, is twelfth.
The home-grown fame is politics, royalty and sport. Siti Nurhaliza, singer and actress, is fifth. Sultan Abdullah of Pahang is sixth at 6.8. Muhyiddin Yassin, Prime Minister from March 2020 to August 2021, is seventh, and Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Deputy Prime Minister since December 2022, tenth. Badminton supplies two: Lee Chong Wei, eighth at 6.5, and Lee Zii Jia at fifteenth.
Eighty-seven Malaysians were measured and every one is living; no dead name reaches the list. The origin reading ranks worldwide attention, and for Malaysia that attention follows its emigrants at least as often as it follows the people who stayed.

About this list
This list ranks people from Malaysia by their overall worldwide fame rather than local attention, as assessed for August 2026: the top 87 of 87 names, frozen as the permanent record of that edition. This is the standard reading: everyone, living or dead, on one scale. 87 of the 87 listed are living; the Alive reading restricts the same ranking to living people.
Michelle Yeoh is No. 1 on this list for August 2026. Behind Michelle Yeoh come Anwar Ibrahim and James Wan.
What famous means here
Fame, in iFAMOUS, is how widely the world knows a name: how recognisable a person's name, face or work is, and how well people know who they are. It is assessed from extensive historical and current public data, some of it reaching back more than twenty years, and it is not merit, talent, importance or popularity on iFANN. The rankings model real-world global fame, not internet fame; the data is the instrument, not the subject. Activity on iFANN itself is excluded.
The month in the title is the date of this edition, not the period measured. The list is a snapshot of overall fame as it stood when the issue was frozen: a name does not lose its place because one month was quiet, and a trending moment alone does not put a name here. Trending attention is published separately on ifann.net.
How the list was ranked
The iFANN Global Fame Rankings combine worldwide Wikipedia readership across languages, worldwide news coverage and search interest anchored against stable reference names, with search history reaching back to 2004. A twelve-month baseline sits behind the current reading and short-lived surges are capped, so the list reflects durable recognition rather than one week of headlines. Rankings are computed daily on ifann.net and frozen on the second day of the following month as that month's issue; a published issue never changes.
About Malaysia
Malaysia is one of the countries and regions the journal ranks every month. Country lists use the same rankings and the same scale as The 100, so a name can be compared with its neighbours and against the world.
