Ruto edges Kipchoge as Kenya's fame splits between State House and the road
iFAMOUS Editorial Desk · 1 min read
A sitting president and a marathon great lead the August 2026 list of Kenyans the world watches, with three former presidents and a Nobel laureate close behind.
William Ruto, President of Kenya since 2022, is the most famous Kenyan in the world for August 2026, with a fame score of 10.2. Eliud Kipchoge, the long-distance runner, sits half a point behind him at 9.7, and the gap between them is smaller than the gap between either man and the rest of the table.
The standard reading puts the living and the dead on one scale, and Kenya's dead hold serious ground. Jomo Kenyatta, the country's first Prime Minister and then President from 1964 to 1978, is third at 8.4, one place above his son Uhuru, who governed from 2013 to 2022. Kelvin Kiptum, the marathon runner who died in 2024 at 24, ties the environmentalist and 2004 Nobel Peace laureate Wangarĩ Maathai at 7.5. Mwai Kibaki and Raila Odinga, the third president and the prime minister of the 2008 coalition, follow at eighth and ninth. Ngũgĩ wa Thiong'o, the novelist who died in 2025, is twelfth.
Emigrants fill the rest. Chris Froome, the British cyclist who won four Tours de France, was born in Nairobi and ranks seventh. Edi Gathegi is a Kenyan-American actor at thirteenth, and Deep Roy, the British actor and puppeteer born Gurdeep Singh Purba in Nairobi, closes the fifteen. Between them sit Faith Kipyegon, Sabastian Sawe and the footballer Victor Wanyama.
Sixty-four Kenyans were measured, fifty of them living. The list is presidents and runners, and little else, which says something true about where the world's attention on Kenya lands.
About this list
This list ranks people from Kenya by their overall worldwide fame rather than local attention, as assessed for August 2026: the top 64 of 64 names, frozen as the permanent record of that edition. This is the standard reading: everyone, living or dead, on one scale. 50 of the 64 listed are living; the Alive reading restricts the same ranking to living people.
William Ruto is No. 1 on this list for August 2026. Behind William Ruto come Eliud Kipchoge and Jomo Kenyatta.
What famous means here
Fame, in iFAMOUS, is how widely the world knows a name: how recognisable a person's name, face or work is, and how well people know who they are. It is assessed from extensive historical and current public data, some of it reaching back more than twenty years, and it is not merit, talent, importance or popularity on iFANN. The rankings model real-world global fame, not internet fame; the data is the instrument, not the subject. Activity on iFANN itself is excluded.
The month in the title is the date of this edition, not the period measured. The list is a snapshot of overall fame as it stood when the issue was frozen: a name does not lose its place because one month was quiet, and a trending moment alone does not put a name here. Trending attention is published separately on ifann.net.
How the list was ranked
The iFANN Global Fame Rankings combine worldwide Wikipedia readership across languages, worldwide news coverage and search interest anchored against stable reference names, with search history reaching back to 2004. A twelve-month baseline sits behind the current reading and short-lived surges are capped, so the list reflects durable recognition rather than one week of headlines. Rankings are computed daily on ifann.net and frozen on the second day of the following month as that month's issue; a published issue never changes.
About Kenya
Kenya is one of the countries and regions the journal ranks every month. Country lists use the same rankings and the same scale as The 100, so a name can be compared with its neighbours and against the world.

iFAMOUS is published by iFANN and powered by the iFANN Global Fame Rankings v5.62. Today's live standing for this list is on ifann.net; the journal freezes it once a month so it can be cited permanently.
