A dead supreme leader, a living one and Khomeini lead Iran's list
iFAMOUS Editorial Desk · 1 min read
Ali Khamenei, assassinated in 2026, tops Iran's origin list for August 2026 ahead of his son and successor Mojtaba, with clerics and presidents filling the top ten.
Ali Khamenei, supreme leader of Iran from 1989 until his assassination in 2026, is the most famous person from Iran in August 2026 with a score of 19.8. Mojtaba Khamenei, his son, who became the third supreme leader in March 2026, is second at 16.3. Ruhollah Khomeini, who held the office from 1979 to 1989, is third at 15. Three supreme leaders, two of them dead, occupy the top of the table, and the order tells the story of a succession the world watched closely this year.
The engine measures 310 people from Iran and shows the top hundred, 65 of them living. The presidents follow the leaders. Masoud Pezeshkian, the heart surgeon in office since 2024, is fourth. Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is seventh and Hassan Rouhani tenth. Abbas Araghchi, the foreign minister, is sixth, and Mohammad-Bagher Ghalibaf, speaker of parliament since 2020, eighth.
The dead hold five of the top twelve. Qasem Soleimani, who led the Quds Force for more than twenty years, is fifth at 12.8. Reza Shah, founder of the Pahlavi dynasty, is ninth, and Ali Larijani, who died in 2026, eleventh. Maryam Mirzakhani, the first woman and first Iranian to win the Fields Medal, is twelfth at 8.9, the only scientist in the group.
Culture and sport appear only at the bottom. Arash, the Iranian-Swedish singer, is thirteenth; Farah Pahlavi, empress consort until 1979, fourteenth; Mehdi Taremi, the Olympiacos striker who captains the national team, fifteenth. The ranking measures worldwide fame, not merit, and Iran's attention is overwhelmingly a matter of who holds power in Tehran.
About this list
This list ranks people from Iran by their overall worldwide fame rather than local attention, as assessed for August 2026: the top 100 of 310 names, frozen as the permanent record of that edition. This is the standard reading: everyone, living or dead, on one scale. 65 of the 100 listed are living; the Alive reading restricts the same ranking to living people.
Ali Khamenei is No. 1 on this list for August 2026. Behind Ali Khamenei come Mojtaba Khamenei and Ruhollah Khomeini.
What famous means here
Fame, in iFAMOUS, is how widely the world knows a name: how recognisable a person's name, face or work is, and how well people know who they are. It is assessed from extensive historical and current public data, some of it reaching back more than twenty years, and it is not merit, talent, importance or popularity on iFANN. The rankings model real-world global fame, not internet fame; the data is the instrument, not the subject. Activity on iFANN itself is excluded.
The month in the title is the date of this edition, not the period measured. The list is a snapshot of overall fame as it stood when the issue was frozen: a name does not lose its place because one month was quiet, and a trending moment alone does not put a name here. Trending attention is published separately on ifann.net.
How the list was ranked
The iFANN Global Fame Rankings combine worldwide Wikipedia readership across languages, worldwide news coverage and search interest anchored against stable reference names, with search history reaching back to 2004. A twelve-month baseline sits behind the current reading and short-lived surges are capped, so the list reflects durable recognition rather than one week of headlines. Rankings are computed daily on ifann.net and frozen on the second day of the following month as that month's issue; a published issue never changes.
About Iran
Iran is one of the countries and regions the journal ranks every month. Country lists use the same rankings and the same scale as The 100, so a name can be compared with its neighbours and against the world.
