Without Puskás and Erdős, Hungary's living list turns on politics and chess

iFAMOUS Editorial Desk · 1 min read

The Alive reading of Hungary's origin list keeps Orbán and Soros at the top and promotes the Polgár sisters, a Nobel laureate and two film directors.

Hungary's Alive reading for August 2026 measures 23 living people and removes three from the standard table: Ferenc Puskás, who was fifth, Paul Erdős, who was eighth, and Béla Guttmann, twelfth. The footballer, the mathematician and the coach were the only dead names in the top fifteen, and their absence pulls the rest of the list up.

The top does not change. Viktor Orbán, prime minister for more than twenty years, leads at 15.7, and George Soros, the investor and philanthropist, follows at 15.3. Péter Magyar, prime minister since May 2026, is third, and Dominik Szoboszlai of Liverpool fourth. Gordon Bajnai, prime minister from 2009 to 2010, sits twelfth, so three current or former heads of government appear in a fifteen-name list.

Chess is now the second field. Judit Polgár, the strongest female player in history, is fifth at 10.4, and Susan Polgar, who rewrote the record books before her, is ninth. László Krasznahorkai, the 2025 Nobel laureate in literature, is sixth. Monica Seles, who played for Yugoslavia and the United States and dominated women's tennis in the early 1990s, is seventh, and Ernő Rubik is eighth.

The promotions at the bottom are cinema. István Szabó, one of the significant figures of European film, is thirteenth, and László Nemes, whose work confronts twentieth-century history directly, is fifteenth, with Zoltán Gera, the former Premier League midfielder, between them. Attila Csihar, the metal vocalist, and Charles Simonyi complete the group. The ranking measures worldwide fame, not merit, and living Hungary's attention is unusually cerebral.

    About this list

This list ranks people from Hungary by their overall worldwide fame rather than local attention, as assessed for August 2026: the top 23 of 23 names, frozen as the permanent record of that edition. This is the Alive reading: living people only. The standard reading ranks everyone, living or dead, on one scale, and is one click away.

Viktor Orbán is No. 1 on this list for August 2026. Behind Viktor Orbán come George Soros and Péter Magyar.

    What famous means here

Fame, in iFAMOUS, is how widely the world knows a name: how recognisable a person's name, face or work is, and how well people know who they are. It is assessed from extensive historical and current public data, some of it reaching back more than twenty years, and it is not merit, talent, importance or popularity on iFANN. The rankings model real-world global fame, not internet fame; the data is the instrument, not the subject. Activity on iFANN itself is excluded.

The month in the title is the date of this edition, not the period measured. The list is a snapshot of overall fame as it stood when the issue was frozen: a name does not lose its place because one month was quiet, and a trending moment alone does not put a name here. Trending attention is published separately on ifann.net.

    How the list was ranked

The iFANN Global Fame Rankings combine worldwide Wikipedia readership across languages, worldwide news coverage and search interest anchored against stable reference names, with search history reaching back to 2004. A twelve-month baseline sits behind the current reading and short-lived surges are capped, so the list reflects durable recognition rather than one week of headlines. Rankings are computed daily on ifann.net and frozen on the second day of the following month as that month's issue; a published issue never changes.

    About Hungary

Hungary is one of the countries and regions the journal ranks every month. Country lists use the same rankings and the same scale as The 100, so a name can be compared with its neighbours and against the world.
