Aristotle leads Greece, and Giannis is the only living name among five
iFAMOUS Editorial Desk · 1 min read
Three ancient philosophers, the founder of modern Turkey and an NBA forward make up Greece's origin list for August 2026.
The Greek origin list for August 2026 has five names, and four of them belong to people who died a long time ago. Aristotle, whose work laid the foundations of Western logic, ethics and science, is the most famous person from Greece with a score of 18.5. Plato, his teacher, is fourth at 13.8, and Socrates, the founding figure of Western philosophy, is fifth at 11.5. Twenty-four centuries later, the world still pays more attention to Athens' philosophers than to almost anyone the country has produced since.
Second place goes to Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, at 16.4. He was born around 1881 in Thessaloniki, then Ottoman and now Greek, and he founded the Republic of Turkey and served as its first president. The engine assigns origin by birthplace, so the founder of one nation appears on the list of another; that is how origin tables work, and it is not a claim about identity.
The single living name is Giannis Antetokounmpo, the Milwaukee Bucks forward widely regarded as one of the greatest power forwards in NBA history, third at 15.4. He is the only athlete, the only person born after 1900 and the only one whose attention is measured in the present tense.
The composition is as thin as it is lopsided: five measured, one alive, one country. Greece's modern singers, shipping magnates, film directors and politicians are not yet captured at this level of coverage. The ranking measures worldwide fame, not merit, and Greek attention as the engine sees it is split between antiquity and one basketball player.

About this list
This list ranks people from Greece by their overall worldwide fame rather than local attention, as assessed for August 2026: the top 5 of 5 names, frozen as the permanent record of that edition. This is the standard reading: everyone, living or dead, on one scale. 1 of the 5 listed are living; the Alive reading restricts the same ranking to living people.
Aristotle is No. 1 on this list for August 2026. Behind Aristotle come Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and Giannis Antetokounmpo.
What famous means here
Fame, in iFAMOUS, is how widely the world knows a name: how recognisable a person's name, face or work is, and how well people know who they are. It is assessed from extensive historical and current public data, some of it reaching back more than twenty years, and it is not merit, talent, importance or popularity on iFANN. The rankings model real-world global fame, not internet fame; the data is the instrument, not the subject. Activity on iFANN itself is excluded.
The month in the title is the date of this edition, not the period measured. The list is a snapshot of overall fame as it stood when the issue was frozen: a name does not lose its place because one month was quiet, and a trending moment alone does not put a name here. Trending attention is published separately on ifann.net.
How the list was ranked
The iFANN Global Fame Rankings combine worldwide Wikipedia readership across languages, worldwide news coverage and search interest anchored against stable reference names, with search history reaching back to 2004. A twelve-month baseline sits behind the current reading and short-lived surges are capped, so the list reflects durable recognition rather than one week of headlines. Rankings are computed daily on ifann.net and frozen on the second day of the following month as that month's issue; a published issue never changes.
About Greece
Greece is one of the countries and regions the journal ranks every month. Country lists use the same rankings and the same scale as The 100, so a name can be compared with its neighbours and against the world.
