Shakespeare outranks Beckham as the most famous Briton alive or dead
iFAMOUS Editorial Desk · 1 min read
The playwright leads the United Kingdom's origin list for August 2026, with the late Queen and Diana also above every living name except one.
William Shakespeare is the most famous person from the United Kingdom in August 2026, four centuries after his death, with a score of 28.8. David Beckham, the former footballer who now co-owns Inter Miami, is the highest living name at 25.3, and then two more dead royals follow: Elizabeth II, queen from 1952 to 2022, at 25, and Diana, Princess of Wales, at 24.6. Isaac Newton is sixth at 23.7. Four of the top six are gone, and they are the four the world keeps returning to.
The engine measures 422 people from the United Kingdom, the largest origin pool in this batch, and shows the top hundred, of whom 78 are living. Below Newton the living take over. Ed Sheeran is fifth, Harry Styles seventh, Adele tenth, Dua Lipa eleventh and Elton John, with more than 300 million records sold, twelfth. Five pop musicians in the top twelve is a shape no other country in this issue matches.
The royal family occupies the rest of the upper table. Catherine, Princess of Wales, is eighth at 23.3, and William, heir to the throne, fifteenth. Between them come Jason Statham, the action-film actor, at ninth, Harry Kane, England's captain and Bayern Munich's striker, at thirteenth, and Christopher Nolan, the filmmaker, at fourteenth.
The ranking counts worldwide fame, not merit. On that scale Britain's fame divides into three streams, the crown, the charts and the stage, with a single footballer and a single scientist among them, and a playwright above all.
About this list
This list ranks people from United Kingdom by their overall worldwide fame rather than local attention, as assessed for August 2026: the top 100 of 422 names, frozen as the permanent record of that edition. This is the standard reading: everyone, living or dead, on one scale. 78 of the 100 listed are living; the Alive reading restricts the same ranking to living people.
William Shakespeare is No. 1 on this list for August 2026. Behind William Shakespeare come David Beckham and Elizabeth II.
What famous means here
Fame, in iFAMOUS, is how widely the world knows a name: how recognisable a person's name, face or work is, and how well people know who they are. It is assessed from extensive historical and current public data, some of it reaching back more than twenty years, and it is not merit, talent, importance or popularity on iFANN. The rankings model real-world global fame, not internet fame; the data is the instrument, not the subject. Activity on iFANN itself is excluded.
The month in the title is the date of this edition, not the period measured. The list is a snapshot of overall fame as it stood when the issue was frozen: a name does not lose its place because one month was quiet, and a trending moment alone does not put a name here. Trending attention is published separately on ifann.net.
How the list was ranked
The iFANN Global Fame Rankings combine worldwide Wikipedia readership across languages, worldwide news coverage and search interest anchored against stable reference names, with search history reaching back to 2004. A twelve-month baseline sits behind the current reading and short-lived surges are capped, so the list reflects durable recognition rather than one week of headlines. Rankings are computed daily on ifann.net and frozen on the second day of the following month as that month's issue; a published issue never changes.
About United Kingdom
United Kingdom is one of the countries and regions the journal ranks every month. Country lists use the same rankings and the same scale as The 100, so a name can be compared with its neighbours and against the world.
